Memaw’s Arctic Roll for Monday, June 22, 2026
βοΈ Well sugar, it’s National Kissing Day, and while Memaw can’t recommend trying to smooch your sweetheart while driving down the Glenn Highway, today is a fine reminder to slow down and appreciate the people waiting for you at the other end of the road. Southcentral Alaska is serving up cool temperatures, mostly cooperative roads, and enough cloud cover to keep us guessing about tonight’s aurora chances.
π Quick heads-up before you hit the highway: thereβs also a second major construction zone on the Seward Highway between MP 90β99 for pavement preservation work. Expect lane closures, flagging, and possible pilot car operations in that stretch in addition to the McHugh Creek project closer to Anchorage.

Whether your favorite kiss comes from a spouse, a grandbaby, a slobbery dog, or one of those boo-boo kisses that somehow fixed everything when you were little, today is about sharing a little affection and gratitude. And speaking of things we appreciate, today’s forecast isn’t trying to pick a fight with anyone. Outside a few construction bottlenecks, Southcentral commuters should spend more time watching the scenery than worrying about the drive. π
βοΈ So pour that coffee and buckle up, Buttercup. Let’s see what Mother Nature has planned for your ride across Southcentral Alaska today.
π’π‘π Daily Verdict: The Weather Gets a Pass, Construction Does Not
- Roads: Generally good driving conditions across Southcentral Alaska with no widespread weather-related travel concerns.
- Traffic: Expect delays in active work zones on the Seward, Sterling, and Glenn highways. The Seward Highway currently carries the highest risk for slowdowns due to multiple construction projects, lane restrictions, and possible pilot car operations.
- Sky: Mostly cloudy conditions may limit aurora viewing tonight, but a few lucky spots could catch a glimpse if skies partially clear.

- Cloud Cover:Β Generally 60-80% across much of Southcentral Alaska
- Viewing Odds:Β Fair only where cloud breaks develop
- Best Direction:Β Northern horizon away from city lights
The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center indicates modest geomagnetic activity tonight. The bigger challenge is cloud cover, not solar activity. If you find a break in the clouds north of the Mat-Su Valley, keep an eye on the northern sky after midnight.
π Memawβs Parting Words

π National Kissing Day reminds us that life’s sweetest moments are usually the simplest ones. A kiss goodbye before work. A grandchild’s sticky-cheeked peck. A wet-nosed puppy greeting you at the door after a long day. Those little moments have a way of sticking with us far longer than any traffic jam ever will.
So if today’s roads treat you kindly, maybe use that extra few minutes to call someone you love, hug somebody a little tighter, or steal a quick smooch from your favorite person. And if the clouds happen to part tonight and the northern lights peek through, consider it Alaska blowing a kiss right back.
Now, it’s your turn to drive alive from dawn to night, be patient in the work zones, and keep those eyes on the road until you’re parked. The kisses can wait until then. ππΆπ
