๐ ๐ Memawโs Morning Commute: Drive Kind, Arrive Safe, Do Some Good
Memaw’s Arctic Roll for Tuesday, August 18, 2026
๐ Memawโs Morning Word
Good morning, buttercups. ๐ โ The roads are mostly behaving, the clouds are playing hide-and-seek, and Southcentral Alaska is serving up a little bit of everything today: showers around the north, sunshine down the Kenai, breezes along the Peninsula and plenty of construction where DOT&PF apparently believes we needed another reminder to slow down. ๐๐ง
So todayโs mission is simple: get where you’re going, give yourself a little extra time, and remember that safe driving is a kindness. Because the best commute is the one where everybody gets home.
Daily Verdict: ๐ข๐ก๐ด Mostly smooth sailing, with construction and wind earning the yellow flags.
Roads: Alaska 511โs live map is available, but its JavaScript-based incident details did not render in the text pull this morning, so I will not pretend I can independently verify a clean incident board. Alaska 511 confirms that its map includes incidents, roadwork, closures, weather incidents and road conditions.
Traffic: Watch the work zones, especially on the Seward and Sterling highways.
Sky: Mostly cloudy across much of Southcentral tonight, with showers possible. Low aurora activity is forecast. If the clouds cooperate, Anchorage may catch a low-on-the-northern-horizon display.

Use it or lose it. ๐ณ๏ธ๐
Your ballot. Your choice. Your voice. . ๐ณ๏ธ๐บ๐ธ
Itโs Primary Election Day, Alaska.
Before you head off to work, school, errands or wherever the road takes you, remember to go vote.
Use it or lose it. Your ballot is your voice, your choice and your chance to have a say in what comes next.
So grab your keys, grab your coffee and, if you haven’t voted yet, make voting part of today’s commute. ๐ณ๏ธโ๐
Memaw’s rule:ย Don’t assume somebody else will do it.ย Show up. Vote. ๐

๐ง Roadwork / Maintenance
Seward Highway MP 69 to 75: Road maintenance is active in both directions through October 2, 2026 at 6 PM. Expect short delays, flagging and lane-closure operations Monday through Friday from 6:30 AM to 6 PM.
Seward Highway MP 90 to 99: Pavement preservation continues. Expect delays, nightly lane closures, flagging and/or pilot-car operations throughout the work zone. The speed limit has been reduced to 55 MPH. Construction equipment and personnel are also working along the adjacent shared-use pathway.
๐ ย Reality check:ย If you’re driving the Seward Highway today, the orange barrels aren’t decoration. Build the delay into your schedule.

๐ Tonightโs Aurora Check
The Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is calling for low aurora activity, with a forecast Kp 3for Tuesday.
The forecast indicates that if skies are clear, low-level displays may be visible overhead from Utqiaฤกvik to Fairbanks and potentially low on the northern horizon as far south as Anchorage.
So, Memaw’s advice?
Don’t make a special midnight expedition based on this forecast. But if you’re outside and the clouds break, look north. ๐๐
๐ Memawโs Parting Words
โ๏ธ Now go on, sugar. ๐
Leave five minutes earlier. Let somebody merge without making it a personal betrayal. Slow down for the crews who are working beside traffic. And if you see somebody having a rough morning, remember that you don’t know what they’re carrying.
A safe commute costs you a few minutes. A bad one can cost much more than time.
Drive alive from dawn to night, hon. โค๏ธ๐
