🎩 Memaw’s Arctic Roll: Mad Hatter Weather, Work Zones and a Wednesday Closure 🚧

☕️ Memaw’s Arctic Roll for Tuesday, October 6, 2026

🎩💅 Happy National Mad Hatter Day, Alaska! Southcentral is celebrating with a morning commute straight down the rabbit hole.

October 6 honors the Mad Hatter from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and today’s forecast is feeling appropriately curiouser and curiouser.

Tea is served. Common sense is not invited. Alice joins the Mad Hatter’s wonderfully unreasonable tea party in John Tenniel’s classic illustration. Illustration: John Tenniel, 1865, via Wikimedia Commons.

Wasilla woke at 37°F. Anchorage is 42°F. Seward has rain, showers are scattered around the region, and fog is lurking around Anchorage and Kenai. The White Rabbit better check that pocket watch twice.

Then there are the work zones. Seward Highway MP 90-99: 55 mph, flaggers, pilot cars and nightly lane closures.Sterling MP 45-47: construction, flaggers, pilot cars and 10-minute delays. And tomorrow night? Sterling disappears down the rabbit hole, closing from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. 🐇

So grab your coffee, watch the road and don’t let the Mad Hatter convince you that 60 mph is a perfectly reasonable answer to being late. 🎩🚗💨

Memaw’s got the map. Let’s keep today’s adventure in Wonderland and off the wrong side of a work-zone barricade.

🟢🟡🔴 Daily Verdict: Wet Roads, Work Zones and a Wednesday-Night Closure

Roads: Wet pavement and showers are the big story this morning. Seward and Sterling highway construction add significant delays and traffic-control concerns.

Traffic: Seward Highway MP 90-99 has flagging, pilot cars, delays and nightly lane closures. Sterling Highway MP 45-47 has flaggers and pilot cars with expected 10-minute delays. Sterling’s scheduled overnight road closure begins at 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Sky: Cloudy today and mostly cloudy tonight. UAF’s aurora forecast sits around Kp 2 tonight, so this is not shaping up as a strong northern-lights night, especially with clouds hanging around.

⚠️ Southcentral Watch (Anchorage Bowl & Hillside)

Anchorage Bowl – Patchy Fog and Showers

  • Status: Reduced-visibility risk
  • When: Morning through early afternoon
  • Where it hits: Anchorage Bowl and surrounding commute corridors
  • Why: NWS forecasts patchy fog before 1 p.m., scattered showers and cloudy skies
  • Reality check: If visibility suddenly drops, slow down. Wet pavement plus fog is no time to drive like you’re late for the Mad Hatter’s tea party.

🚗✨ Parks Highway

Parks Highway @ Hawk Lane MP 53.2 -2 | Alaska 511

Sunrise: 8:18 a.m.
Sunset: 7:11 p.m.

Aurora Forecast for Tonight

Kp 2. UAF’s forecast keeps activity low tonight. Mostly cloudy skies and scattered showers could obscure any aurora that does appear.

🚗✨ Glenn Highway

Glenn Highway MP 12.8 @ Eagle River Bridge | Alaska 511

Sunrise: 8:16 a.m.
Sunset: 7:10 p.m.

Aurora Forecast for Tonight

Kp 2. Mostly cloudy with scattered showers. Not a promising viewing night.

🚜✨ Seward Highway

Seward Highway MP 96.3 @ Bird Point | Alaska 511

🚧 Seward Highway MP 90-99 – Pavement Preservation

Contractor: Granite Construction Company
Agency: Alaska DOT&PF

  • Project: Pavement Preservation Phase 1
  • Location: MP 90-99
  • Traffic control: Flagging operations and/or pilot cars
  • Delays: Expected
  • Night work: Nightly lane closures throughout the work zone
  • Speed limit: Reduced to 55 mph
  • Additional work: Construction equipment and personnel will be along the adjacent shared-use pathway while crews perform digout and repaving operations.
  • Pathway: A shuttle service will be provided when the pathway is determined unsafe to traverse during construction.

💅 Reality check: This is a slow-down-and-plan-ahead zone. The posted speed is 55 mph, delays are expected and nighttime lane closures mean the trip can take longer than usual.

Aurora Forecast for Tonight

Kp 2. Mostly cloudy with scattered showers. The clouds are likely to spoil the view before weak auroral activity gets much of a chance.

🚜✨ Sterling Highway

Sterling Hwy & Lake St | Homer | Alaska 511

🚧 Sterling Highway MP 45-47 – Roadwork / Maintenance

Contractor: QAP
Agency: Alaska DOT&PF

  • Blasting: Monday-Friday
  • Construction: Monday-Saturday, 6 a.m.-7 p.m.
  • Traffic control: Flaggers and pilot cars
  • Expected delay: About 10 minutes
  • Location: MP 45-47
  • Watch for: Construction equipment entering and exiting the highway
  • Trails: All trails within the corridor remain open

🚨 Scheduled Sterling Highway Road Closure

Begins: 10 p.m. Wednesday, October 7
Ends: 4 a.m. Thursday, October 8

This is a scheduled ROAD CLOSURE, not one of the usual 10-minute construction delays.

💅 Reality check: If you’re traveling through MP 45-47 Wednesday night, make your alternate plans before you leave. Do not treat the 10-minute delay notice as applying to this overnight closure.

🌃 Aurora Forecast for Tonight

Kp 2. Mostly cloudy with scattered showers. This is shaping up as a clouds-and-coffee night rather than an aurora-chasing night.

🎩 Memaw’s Parting Words

☕️ Well, Wonderland travelers, that’s enough nonsense for one commute. 🎩🚧

Today’s menu includes wet pavement, gray skies, a little fog and two highways serving up their own special flavor of “surprise!”

Seward MP 90-99 says 55 mph, please, with flaggers, pilot cars and nightly lane closures. Sterling MP 45-47 has construction, pilot cars and 10-minute delays. And tomorrow night, Sterling pulls the ultimate Mad Hatter move: the road closes completely from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.

So don’t be the White Rabbit racing toward a closure while muttering, “I’m late! I’m late!” 🐇

Give yourself time. Give road crews room. And when the highway throws you a plot twist, don’t lose your head. That’s a terrible way to drive.

Now straighten that hat, find your keys and get on with your day. 🎩✨

💡 Hats off to a curious bit of history: “Mad as a hatter” is commonly linked to 18th- and 19th-century hatmakers who used mercury nitrate to turn fur into felt. Prolonged exposure could cause tremors and changes in mood and behavior, though the phrase’s exact origin remains uncertain. | Illustration by John Tenniel, 1865. Memaw’s advice? Keep your commute sensible, your coffee hot and your nonsense strictly recreational. 💅🎩✨Forecasts from NOAA, the National Weather Service, and Alaska 511. Reality checks from Memaw. Both are subject to change without notice.
