🚗✨ Memaw’s Arctic Roll: Wet Roads, Cloudy Skies and a Sterling Surprise

Memaw’s Arctic Roll for Wednesday, October 7, 2026

☕ Rain jackets? Check. Headlights? Absolutely. Coffee with a cop? You’ve got a couple of chances today and tomorrow. Memaw has the details below ⬇️ 💅

Southcentral is starting the day damp, gray and mild. Anchorage is sitting at 44°F with light rain, Wasilla is 42°F under overcast skies, Kenai is 39°F, Homer is a foggy 34°F, and Seward is 39°F. NWS has scattered showers across the region today, with temperatures mostly in the mid-to-upper 40s. National Weather Service

The big road-news wrinkle comes tonight: Sterling Highway MP 45-47 is scheduled to close from 10 p.m. Wednesday until 4 a.m. Thursday. That one deserves more than a passing mention.

And the northern lights? The numbers aren’t terrible, but the clouds are the party pooper tonight.

🟡🟡🔴 Daily Verdict: Wet Roads, Cloudy Skies and a 10 PM Sterling Closure

Roads: Wet across Southcentral, with scattered showers and patchy fog in parts of the region.
Traffic: No active Alaska 511 alerts at this morning’s check; construction remains the big travel-time factor. Alaska 511
Sky: Mostly cloudy tonight, so aurora viewing from Southcentral is a long shot despite low-level geomagnetic activity.
Headlights: On for the commute. Rain, gray skies and patchy fog mean visibility can change quickly. Be seen and give yourself extra stopping room.

🚗✨ Parks Highway

Parks Highway @ Hawk Lane MP 53.2 – 3 | Alaska 511

The Parks is a wet-road commute today. Wasilla starts at 42°F, with scattered showers and a forecast high near 45°F. Tonight drops to about 34°F, with patchy fog developing after 1 a.m. National Weather Service

Sunrise & Sunset: 8:21 a.m. / 7:11 p.m. for the Wasilla-area Parks corridor. Time and Date

Aurora Forecast for Tonight: Kp 2 range. UAF calls for low aurora activity, with the best chance generally toward northern Alaska. From Anchorage and Southcentral, displays could be low on the northern horizon if skies are clear. Tonight’s mostly cloudy forecast is the bigger problem. NOAA’s geomagnetic forecast also keeps activity around Kp 2 for tonight’s local hours. NOAA SWPC

🛻✨ Glenn Highway

Glenn Highway MP 31.1 @ 2nd Knik River Bridge | Alaska 511

The Glenn gets the same basic recipe as the northern Mat-Su: mild temperatures, wet pavement and showers. The Palmer-area sunrise is a little later than some points farther south, because, yes, the Earth is round. 😉

Sunrise & Sunset: 8:19 a.m. / 7:07 p.m. in Palmer. Time and Date

Aurora Forecast for Tonight: Low activity, Kp around 2. Cloud cover is the spoiler. If the clouds don’t cooperate, the aurora can have the night off.

🚜✨ Seward Highway

Seward Highway MP 120 _ Huffman Road | Alaska 511

Southcentral’s southern corridor is starting wetter and cooler. Seward is at 39°F with overcast skies, and NWS forecasts scattered showers, patchy fog before 10 a.m., a high near 47°F, then a low around 39°F tonight. Time and Date

🚧 Roadwork / Maintenance

Seward Hwy MP 90-99: Expect flagging and/or pilot-car operations, delays and nightly lane closures throughout the work zone. Speed limit is reduced to 55 MPH.

Sunrise & Sunset: 8:18 a.m. / 7:11 p.m. in Seward. Time and Date

Aurora Forecast for Tonight: Low activity, and clouds are expected to dominate. Along the Seward Highway, don’t make an aurora chase out of a cloudy night.

🚜✨ Sterling Highway

Sterling Hwy & Birch St_Park | Soldotna | Alaska 511

Here’s the one you really need to remember today.

Kenai is starting at 39°F with overcast skies. NWS forecasts scattered showers, patchy fog before 10 a.m., a high near 47°F, and a low around 34°F tonight. Time and Date

🚧 Roadwork / Maintenance

STERLING HIGHWAY MP 45-47: Blasting Monday-Friday and construction Monday-Saturday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Flagging and pilot cars can cause 10-minute delays.

And tonight: ROAD CLOSURE.

Scheduled closure: 10 p.m. Wednesday, October 7, 2026, through 4 a.m. Thursday, October 8, 2026.

Sunrise & Sunset: 8:26 a.m. / 7:17 p.m. in Kenai. Time and Date

Aurora Forecast for Tonight: Low activity, but clouds are expected. The Sterling’s scheduled 10 p.m. closure is considerably more certain than any northern-lights show.

🏎️✨ Knik Goose Bay Road

KGB & S Clapp – W Fairview Loop | Alaska 511

Knik Goose Bay gets the wet Mat-Su treatment today: scattered showers, mostly cloudy skies and temperatures comfortably above freezing. Wasilla is forecast to reach 45°F, then fall to about 34°F tonight. National Weather Service

Sunrise & Sunset: 8:21 a.m. / 7:11 p.m. for the Wasilla-area Knik corridor. Time and Date

Aurora Forecast for Tonight: Kp around 2 and low activity. The clouds are the deal-breaker. If they unexpectedly thin out, look north. If they don’t, well, Memaw recommends coffee instead.

☕ One More Thing Before You Roll

It’s National Coffee with a Cop Day, and Anchorage has a couple of chances to turn caffeine into conversation.

The Anchorage Airport Police & Fire Department is holding Coffee with a Cop this morning from 9 to 11 a.m. at the South Terminal on the public side of screening, with free coffee, donuts and conversation.

And tomorrow, October 8, APD, Cops for Community and the Anchorage 5th Avenue Mall will host Coffee with a Cop from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Level 1 in front of JCPenney.

Because sometimes the best way to know your community is to sit down, grab a cup and actually talk to the people serving it.

💅 Memaw’s Parting Words

☕ Coffee first. Confusion? Not today.

Today isn’t bringing Southcentral any great weather drama. It’s bringing something sneakier: wet pavement, scattered showers, patchy fog and an increasingly dark commute.

And tonight, remember this little number: 10 p.m.

That’s when the Sterling Highway MP 45-47 closure begins.

So don’t wait until you’re staring at a barricade wondering what Memaw meant. Plan that trip before you roll.

Drive alive from dawn to night, give the workers room, turn those headlights on and go make somebody’s Wednesday a little nicer. 💖

And if you’re headed for coffee with a cop today, have a cup for Memaw. 💅☕

Forecasts from NOAA, the National Weather Service, and Alaska 511. Reality checks from Memaw. Both are subject to change without notice.
