Memaw’s Arctic Roll for Wednesday, May 13, 2026
☕️ Good morning, road warriors! Southcentral Alaska’s entering that glorious time of year where the snow melts, the potholes bloom like state flowers, and every highway comes with orange cones, surprise lane shifts, and at least one driver towing something questionable. 💅
Anchorage and the Mat-Su warm into the low-to-mid 50s today with scattered showers drifting around the region, while the Kenai stays cooler and cloudier into tonight. Meanwhile, the Glenn Highway has commuters doing construction choreography through narrowed bridge lanes and shifting traffic patterns, the Sterling Highway is gearing up for another summer of heavy equipment and backups, and potholes across Southcentral are now deep enough to qualify as freshwater features.
🟢🟡🔴 Daily Verdict: Mostly Easy Cruise with Wet-Road Surprises & a Small Aurora Gamble
Roads: Mostly fair across Southcentral per Alaska 511
Traffic: Light overall, no major corridor shutdowns reported this morning
Sky: Clouds may break late tonight enough for parts of the Valley and Kenai to catch a faint aurora peek.
Southcentral summer driving season has officially arrived.

🚧 Glenn Highway Construction Watch 🚧
Glenn Highway Bridge Deck Preservation Project
- Status: Northbound bridge CLOSED for 45 days beginning April 18
- Traffic Pattern: All traffic shifted onto the southbound bridge
- Speed Reduction: 45 MPH through work zone
- Lane Widths: Narrowed to 11 feet
Peak Flow Setup:
- Morning commute: Two lanes Anchorage-bound
- Afternoon commute: Two lanes Mat-Su-bound
Special Midday Restriction:
- One lane each direction from 10 AM to noon on weekday barrier shift windows
💅 Reality check: This is one of those “looks fine on Google Maps until everybody hits the brakes at once” projects. Build buffer time into every Anchorage-Mat-Su run right now.
Birchwood Loop Northbound On-Ramp Closure
- Status: CLOSED for 45 days beginning April 18
- Impact: Northbound access to Glenn Highway from Birchwood Loop Road blocked
- Detour: Drivers must use the Old Glenn Highway to reach the next northbound on-ramp
💅 Reality check: Birchwood Loop northbound access is closed. Drivers need to use Old Glenn Highway to reach the next northbound on-ramp.

Juneau Creek Bridge Project
(Sterling Hwy MP 45-60: Stage 1B/3)

Sterling Highway Rural Standards Upgrade Project
- Purpose: Upgrade approximately 2.4 miles of Sterling Highway to current rural highway standards plus construction of roughly 2 miles of separated pathway
- Work Includes: Excavation, embankment, drainage, paving, signing, and striping

🌌 Aurora Outlook Tonight
NOAA’s latest geomagnetic guidance keeps Southcentral in the “possible but not guaranteed” category tonight, with Kp values hovering around 3 to 4 and a weak geomagnetic enhancement possible from recent solar activity. Cloud cover remains the biggest problem. Valley locations have the best odds if skies partially clear overnight.
💅 Memaw’s Parting Words
Tourist season’s waking up and construction season came with it. That means rental RVs drifting across lane lines, orange cones multiplying overnight, and somebody braking to 12 MPH because they saw a moose-shaped stump.
Give yourself extra time, keep your head on a swivel through the work zones, and don’t assume the car in front of you has any idea where it’s going. Southcentral’s officially entering summer road survival season.
