💅 Fog, Fido & Fine Roads: Memaw’s Wednesday Morning Commute

Memaw’s Commute for Wednesday, August 26, 2026

If your morning commute looks like somebody smeared Vaseline across the windshield, honey, that ain’t your imagination. 💅🌫️ The National Weather Service has a Special Weather Statement out for areas of fog, including pockets of dense fog along the Glenn Highway from just north of Anchorage to Palmer and along the Parks Highway from Wasilla toward Willow. Visibility can change fast, especially around the Knik River Bridge and Glenn/Parks interchange. Headlights on, speed down, patience up.

Then the fog burns off and Southcentral gets a pretty sweet deal: mostly sunny skies, comfortable temperatures and, tonight, a chance to celebrate National Dog Day with your favorite four-legged passenger. 🐕❤️

🟢🟡🔴 Daily Verdict: Foggy Start, Sunny Finish with a Quiet Aurora Bonus

  • Roads: Alaska 511 currently shows no statewide alerts; today’s biggest immediate travel issue is the NWS fog statement affecting portions of the Glenn and Parks corridors.
  • Traffic: No major Alaska 511 alert is currently posted, but reduced visibility is the morning troublemaker.
  • Sky: Fog early, then sunshine. Tonight turns mostly clear across much of Southcentral. Aurora activity is forecast to remain quiet, so don’t expect the sky to put on a blockbuster show.

⚠️ Mat-Su Watch

Glenn & Parks Highways – Morning Dense Fog

  • Status: Reduced visibility, with pockets of dense fog
  • When: This morning, especially before 10 AM
  • Where it hits: Glenn Highway from just north of Anchorage to Palmer, and Parks Highway from Wasilla toward Willow; densest pockets are expected from the Knik River Bridge to the Glenn/Parks interchange
  • Why: Areas of fog and patchy dense fog developed early this morning

💅 Reality check: If the road suddenly disappears into a gray wall, don’t panic and don’t stomp on the brakes. Headlights on, slow down and leave plenty of room.

⚠️ Southcentral Watch (Anchorage Bowl & Hillside)

Anchorage Bowl – Morning Fog

  • Status: Fog possible before 10 AM
  • When: Morning commute
  • Where it hits: Anchorage and nearby commute corridors
  • Why: Areas of morning fog are forecast before skies turn sunny

💅 Reality check: The Anchorage forecast improves quickly, but the road doesn’t care how pretty the sky gets later. Drive for what you can see now.

🚙💨 Parks Highway

Parks Highway @ Hawk Lane MP 53.2 | Alaska 511
Time of DayHi Temperatures (°F)Lo TemperaturesDriving TipsRoad Risk Level
Morning47 to 5542Dense fog is the main hazard. Use headlights, reduce speed and expect sudden visibility changes.🟡 Moderate
Afternoon58 to 6142Fog should lift, giving way to sunshine. Normal summer driving conditions otherwise.🟢 Low
Evening55 to 6142Mostly clear and comfortable. Watch for wildlife as daylight fades.🟢 Low

Sunrise & Sunset: Wasilla 6:33 AM to 9:23 PM; Palmer 6:32 AM to 9:32 PM.

Aurora Forecast for Tonight: Kp 3 around 7 PM, Kp 3 around 10 PM. Quiet aurora activity is forecast. If skies are clear, displays may be visible farther north, with only a low-horizon possibility as far south as Talkeetna.

💅 Memaw tip: The fog is your morning boss battle. Once it burns off, this highway gets much friendlier.

🛻💨 Glenn Highway

Glenn Highway @ 2nd Knik River Bridge MP 31.1 | Alaska 511
Time of DayHi Temperatures (°F)Lo TemperaturesDriving TipsRoad Risk Level
Morning49 to 5544Fog alert. Expect rapidly changing visibility from north Anchorage through Palmer, particularly near the Knik River Bridge and Glenn/Parks interchange.🔴 High
Afternoon58 to 6344Sunshine returns. Watch your speed as visibility improves.🟢 Low
Evening55 to 6344Mostly clear. Normal summer driving conditions.🟢 Low

Sunrise & Sunset: Palmer 6:32 AM to 9:32 PM; Anchorage 6:37 AM to 9:23 PM.

Aurora Forecast for Tonight: Quiet activity. Kp 3 is forecast around 7 and 10 PM, with stronger activity earlier in the day but little reason to expect a major Southcentral display tonight.

👉 Memaw tip: This is the road where you earn your coffee today. Fog means slow down before you enter it, not after you’re already swimming in it.

🚐💨 Seward Highway

Seward Highway @ Bird Point MP 96.3 | Alaska 511
Time of DayHi Temperatures (°F)Lo TemperaturesDriving TipsRoad Risk Level
Morning50 to 5546Fog is possible near the Anchorage end and Turnagain Arm. South of Anchorage, expect increasing north winds.🟡 Moderate
Afternoon55 to 6346Sunny, but north winds can be strong near Seward and Turnagain Arm. Keep both hands available for gusts.🟡 Moderate
Evening50 to 6346Mostly clear. North winds continue, with gusts potentially reaching 30 mph around Seward.🟡 Moderate

Seward’s NWS forecast calls for 63°F today, north winds of 10 to 15 mph with gusts as high as 25 mph, followed tonight by north winds around 15 mph with gusts as high as 30 mph.

Sunrise & Sunset: Anchorage 6:37 AM to 9:23 PM; Girdwood 6:35 AM to 9:20 PM.

Aurora Forecast for Tonight: Quiet. Clouds should not be the primary problem tonight, but the long daylight and low forecast activity make this more of a maybe than a must-see.

💅 Memaw tip: On the Seward, fog gets your attention. Wind gets your steering wheel. Respect both.

🚚💨 Sterling Highway

Sterling Highway @ Tern Lake MP 37 | Alaska 511
Time of DayHi Temperatures (°F)Lo TemperaturesDriving TipsRoad Risk Level
Morning42 to 5044Fog and mist are possible early, especially around Kenai and Homer.🟡 Moderate
Afternoon55 to 6144Sunny and much easier driving.🟢 Low
Evening50 to 6144Mostly clear. Watch for wildlife and fading light.🟢 Low

Kenai’s forecast is sunny with a high near 61°F, while Homer is forecast to reach 61°F after patchy morning fog. Both locations are expected to fall to around 44°F tonight.

Sunrise & Sunset: Homer 6:48 AM to 9:25 PM.

Aurora Forecast for Tonight: Quiet activity. At these latitudes, don’t plan the evening around an aurora, but a clear sky never hurts your chances.

💅 Memaw tip: The Peninsula gets the sunshine after breakfast. Until then, treat that fog like it owes you money and give it plenty of space.

🏎️💨 Knik Goose Bay Road

KGB & S Clapp – W Fairview Loop | Alaska 511
Time of DayHi Temperatures (°F)Lo TemperaturesDriving TipsRoad Risk Level
Morning47 to 5542Dense fog can reduce visibility sharply. Headlights on and slow down.🔴 High
Afternoon58 to 6142Sunny after morning fog. Normal summer driving conditions.🟢 Low
Evening55 to 6142Mostly clear. Watch for wildlife and changing visibility after sunset.🟢 Low

Wasilla’s NWS forecast calls for patchy fog before 10 AM, followed by sunshine and a high near 61°F. Tonight is forecast mostly clear with a low around 42°F.

Sunrise & Sunset: Wasilla 6:33 AM to 9:23 PM.

Aurora Forecast for Tonight: Quiet activity. Kp is forecast around 3 later tonight, but this isn’t shaping up as a big Southcentral aurora night.

💅 Memaw tip: Knik Goose Bay doesn’t need much drama added to it. Fog already brought enough. Slow down and arrive with your nerves intact.

🐕 Memaw’s Parting Words

National Dog Day is today, so here’s your reminder from Memaw: the best passenger in Alaska is the one who doesn’t complain about the commute, doesn’t grab the steering wheel or gasp at every bump in the road and is perfectly happy with a Scooby snack. 🐕😂

Best Day Ever: Windows down, ears flapping, wind in his face and absolutely nowhere else he’d rather be. 🐶💨❤️ Just a good dog living his very best car-ride life. Happy National Dog Day! 🐾

Give your good dog an extra scratch today. If you’re thinking about adding a furry passenger to the family, remember that shelters are full of mixed breeds, purebreds and wonderful mutts waiting for somebody to see the dog, not just the breed. ❤️

Drivers, here’s today’s final order from the front seat: fog means slow, sunshine means smile, and a dog in the car means keep your eyes on the road. And as always, drive alive from dawn to night. 💅🐾🚗 💖
