Memaw’s Arctic Roll for Tuesday, August 25, 2026

☕️ Good morning, road warriors. Get a grip, Alaska. We’ve got rain, wind and some serious gusts on the menu today, so this is a two-hands-on-the-wheel kind of morning. Conveniently, it’s also National Kiss and Make Up Day, which means Memaw has one more piece of advice: grip the wheel, not the grudge. 💋

The National Weather Service has a Special Weather Statement out for strong southeast winds today, with the strongest winds expected roughly 8 AM to 6 PM. Anchorage Hillside could see 20 to 30 mph winds with gusts of 40 to 50 mph, while South and West Anchorage and Turnagain Arm could see gusts as high as 50 mph. Palmer and Butte could see gusts up to 40 mph. Rain will accompany the wind, and some of it could be heavy.

💅 So here’s Memaw’s Tuesday challenge: find somebody you’ve been fussing with and see if the two of you can call a truce. If neither of you can remember what started the fight anymore, that’s probably a pretty good sign it’s time to stop keeping score. 💖

🟢🟡🔴 Daily Verdict: Get a Grip, Alaska. Wind and Rain Mean a White-Knuckle Tuesday

• Roads: Wet pavement and rain are the dominant weather hazards today, with strong southeast winds creating additional risk for high-profile vehicles, trailers and exposed stretches.

• Sky: Mostly cloudy and rainy for much of Southcentral. Aurora activity is forecast to remain quiet tonight, with clouds likely to be the bigger obstacle.

⚠️ Mat-Su Watch

Palmer, Butte & Wasilla: Strong Winds and Heavy Rain

• Status: Wind and rain impact expected
• When: Strongest winds generally 8 AM to 6 PM
• Where it hits: Palmer, Butte, Wasilla and surrounding Mat-Su roads
• Why: Strong southeast winds accompanying a rainy system
• Official Wasilla forecast: Rain, potentially heavy at times, with a high near 56°F, east winds 10 to 15 mph, and a 90% chance of precipitation.

The NWS special weather statement puts Palmer and Butte at 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph.

💅 Reality check: If you’re towing or driving something tall, today’s wind deserves your full attention. This is not the day to discover how much your trailer really weighs.

⚠️ Southcentral Watch (Anchorage Bowl & Hillside)

Anchorage Hillside & Turnagain Arm: Strong Southeast Winds

• Where it hits: Anchorage Hillside, South and West Anchorage, Turnagain Arm from Portage to Indian
• Why: Strong southeast winds accompanying today’s storm system
• Official wind forecast: Hillside 20 to 30 mph with gusts 40 to 50 mph. South and West Anchorage along Turnagain Arm 20 to 30 mph with gusts 35 to 50 mph.

💅 Reality check: Wet pavement plus a 50-mph gust is not the time to drive like you’re late for something important. Slow down and leave room.

The NWS forecast for Seward calls for rain, high near 58°F, south winds 5 to 15 mph and an 80% chance of precipitation. The bigger issue is farther north: NWS specifically warns of 40 to 50 mph gusts along Turnagain Arm from Portage to Indian.

Aurora Forecast: Quiet. With rain and clouds hanging around, the odds of seeing much tonight are poor even though some geomagnetic activity is possible.

Aurora Forecast: Quiet activity. Clouds are likely to make viewing difficult.

🌌 Tonight’s Aurora Check

The Geophysical Institute’s forecast for Tuesday, August 25, calls for quiet activity, with the current and forecast Kp values generally in the 1 to 2 range and Kp 2 around the evening period.

The forecast says quiet displays may be visible overhead farther north if skies are clear. Around Southcentral Alaska, however, cloud cover is likely to be the deal-breaker.
