💅🌧️ Bacon, Showers & a Whole Lotta Road: Memaw Has Checked the Roll
Memaw’s Arctic Roll for Thursday, August 20, 2026
Thursday has arrived with a damp little attitude. Anchorage is sitting at 53°F under overcast skies, Wasilla is at 54°F, and Kenai is at 54°F. Showers are on the menu for much of Southcentral, so today’s commute is less “sunny cruise” and more “keep your windshield wipers handy, honey.” 🌧️💅
And since it’s National Bacon Lovers Day, Memaw says there’s no better day to start thinking about where your next great Alaska bite is coming from. 🥓🍴 Taste of Homer is coming August 28–September 7, bringing restaurant specials, culinary experiences and plenty of Homer flavor to the table. Consider this your delicious little reminder to save the dates, grab a passport and come hungry. 👀🌊
Now, about that commute… Memaw has checked the roads, the rain and the work zones. Let’s roll. 🛻💨

🟡 Daily Verdict: Wet Roads, Work Zones & a Watch-the-Wipers Kind of Day 💅🌧️
Showers are moving through Southcentral, so expect wet pavement and changing visibility, with active construction adding delays along parts of the Seward and Sterling highways. Take it steady, watch the flaggers and give yourself a little extra time. 🚗💦
🚙💨 Parks Highway

| Time of Day | Hi Temperatures (°F) | Lo Temperatures (°F) | Driving Tips | Road Risk Level |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Morning | 54 to 61 | 54 | Wet pavement possible. Watch for scattered showers and reduced visibility. | 🟢 Low to 🟡 Moderate |
| Afternoon | 61 | 54 | Showers possible. Slow down for standing water and spray. | 🟡 Moderate |
| Evening | 61 | 52 to 54 | Damp pavement continues. Watch for heavier showers and glare. | 🟡 Moderate |
| Sunrise & Sunset | Wasilla: 6:18 AM | Sunset: 9:42 PM | Long daylight, but clouds and rain can make it feel darker. | 🟢 Low |
| Aurora Forecast Tonight | Kp 2 at 10 PM | Low activity | Skies are the problem, not the aurora forecast. If clouds break, a low-level display may be visible. | 🟢 Low |
🚙💨 Glenn Highway

| Time of Day | Hi Temperatures (°F) | Lo Temperatures (°F) | Driving Tips | Road Risk Level |
| Morning | 53 to 61 | 53 | Damp pavement and showers possible. Watch following distances. | 🟢 Low to 🟡 Moderate |
| Afternoon | 61 | 52 to 54 | Expect wet pavement and possible spray during showers. | 🟡 Moderate |
| Evening | 61 | 52 | Showers likely. Keep headlights on and leave extra room. | 🟡 Moderate |
| Sunrise & Sunset | Palmer: 6:16 AM | Sunset: 9:40 PM | Daylight is plentiful, but weather can still reduce contrast. | 🟢 Low |
| Aurora Forecast Tonight | Kp 2 at 10 PM | Low activity | A cloud break would help more than a strong geomagnetic forecast. | 🟢 Low |
🚜💨 Seward Highway

| Time of Day | Hi Temperatures (°F) | Lo Temperatures (°F) | Driving Tips | Road Risk Level |
| Morning | 51 to 55 | 51 | Rain is likely before 10 AM. Watch spray and wet pavement. | 🟡 Moderate |
| Afternoon | 55 | 50 to 51 | Showers continue. Expect damp pavement through the corridor. | 🟡 Moderate |
| Evening | 55 | 50 | Showers continue tonight. Slow down and watch for changing visibility. | 🟡 Moderate |
| Sunrise & Sunset | Girdwood: 6:13 AM | Sunset: 9:38 PM | Mountain shadows and rain can change road conditions quickly. | 🟡 Moderate |
| Aurora Forecast Tonight | Kp 2 at 10 PM | Low activity | Cloud cover is likely to be the bigger obstacle. | 🟢 Low |
🚧 Seward Highway Roadwork / Maintenance
MP 75 to MP 69, both directions
- Active: Daily through October 2, 2026
- Monday-Friday: Short delays, flagging and lane closures expected 6:30 AM to 6:00 PM
- Agency: Alaska DOT&PF
- Last updated: August 4, 2026
MP 90 to MP 99
- Pavement Preservation Phase 1
- Expect delays, nightly lane closures, flagging and/or pilot-car operations.
- Speed limit reduced to 55 MPH.
- Watch for construction equipment and personnel near the adjacent shared-use pathway.
- Last updated by DOT&PF August 13, 2026.
💅 Reality check: On the Seward, the construction is not a surprise. The surprise is how quickly a “short delay” turns into a longer one when everybody reaches the work zone at once. Build in time.
Alaska 511 identifies road-condition, incident, roadwork, temporary-work-zone and closure information as separate live map layers.

🚧 Sterling Highway Roadwork / Maintenance
MP 45 to MP 47
- Blasting: Monday-Friday
- Construction crews: Monday-Saturday, 6 AM to 7 PM
- Flagging: During blasting operations
- Expected delay: 5 to 10 minutes
- Watch for construction equipment entering and exiting the roadway.

💅 Reality check: When the signs say blasting, Memaw says believe the signs. Expect the flaggers to win every argument with your schedule.
Kenai’s NWS forecast calls for showers likely mainly between 7 AM and 10 AM, a high near 57°F, northeast winds around 10 mph and a 70% chance of showers Thursday night.
🚗💨 Knik Goose Bay Road

| Time of Day | Hi Temperatures (°F) | Lo Temperatures (°F) | Driving Tips | Road Risk Level |
| Morning | 54 to 61 | 54 | Damp pavement and scattered showers possible. | 🟢 Low to 🟡 Moderate |
| Afternoon | 61 | 54 | Watch for wet pavement and reduced visibility during showers. | 🟡 Moderate |
| Evening | 61 | 52 to 54 | Damp roads continue. Don’t outrun your headlights after dark. | 🟡 Moderate |
| Sunrise & Sunset | Wasilla: 6:18 AM | Sunset: 9:42 PM | Long daylight helps, but clouds can flatten visibility. | 🟢 Low |
| Aurora Forecast Tonight | Kp 2 at 10 PM | Low activity | If the clouds cooperate, low-level aurora may be visible. | 🟢 Low |
🌌 Aurora Check
Thursday’s forecast: Kp 3 early, Kp 4 around 1 PM, then Kp 2 at 4 PM, 7 PM and 10 PM.
The Geophysical Institute forecast calls for low aurora activity tonight. If skies are clear, low-level displays may be visible overhead from Utqiaġvik to Fairbanks and potentially low on the northern horizon as far south as Anchorage and Juneau.
The problem tonight is not the geomagnetic forecast. It’s the clouds.
And yes, that first-quarter Moon is out there doing its thing, too. 🌙
