Trump’s Loudest Defender Is Leaving the Group Chat

Karoline Leavitt is stepping away from the White House podium, but don’t mistake that for leaving Trumpworld.

Every workplace has that one person who can walk into a messy meeting, defend the boss with total confidence, and make it sound like everyone else is the problem. For Donald Trump, that person has been Karoline Leavitt.

Leavitt is leaving her White House press secretary job at the end of August to spend more time with her family. She will not, however, be disappearing from Trump’s orbit. Trump says she will stay on as a top outside adviser, which means she is giving up the daily briefing-room combat. Not the political fight.

Her replacement has not been chosen. The names being floated range from the White House’s own Anna Kelly to Trump loyalist Alina Habba, Breitbart reporter Matthew Boyle, and communications director Steven Cheung. The bigger question is not simply who gets the title. It is whether Trump wants someone who can calmly run the room, someone who can spar on cable news, or someone prepared to turn every press briefing into a campaign clip.

Leavitt helped change the job by treating the press room less like a formal briefing and more like a content battlefield. She opened space for podcasters, influencers, and other “new media” voices while making clear that the White House did not see traditional reporters as neutral referees.

So yes, she is leaving the podium. But in Trump’s political universe, the group chat is always open.
