🌧️ Memaw’s Arctic Roll: Rain Takes the Wheel on Friday

☕️🚗💨 Friday has arrived with rain, wet roads and zero patience for sloppy driving. Southcentral is starting the day damp, with more rain on the way and clouds hanging around tonight. Memaw’s Arctic Roll has the road-by-road 411 before you roll out. 💅

Today is also National POW/MIA Recognition Day, a day to remember the Americans who were prisoners of war and those who remain missing in action. We remember them, we honor their service, and we remember the loved ones who have carried that absence for generations. They are not forgotten. 🇺🇸

The POW/MIA Flag The black-and-white POW/MIA flag was created by the National League of Families of American Prisoners and Missing in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War era. Its design became a powerful symbol of America’s commitment to remembering service members who were captured or remain missing. Today, the flag is displayed at military installations, government buildings and other locations across the country as a reminder that those who served and never came home have not been forgotten. Wasilla is starting at 49°F under mostly cloudy skies. Anchorage is also 49°F with light rain, while Kenai and Seward are in the upper 40s. Seward is also reporting fog and mist with visibility down to 4 miles.

Today’s story is pretty simple: wet pavement, rain, spray and visibility. It isn’t cold enough for ice to be part of today’s commute, so we’re leaving that particular worry on the shelf for another day.

🟢🟡🔴 Daily Verdict: Rainy Roll With Wet Roads Ahead

Roads: Wet conditions across Southcentral.
Traffic: No active Alaska 511 alerts this morning.
Sky: Rain and clouds dominate Friday and Friday night. Kp 2 means low aurora activity, and the cloud cover makes Southcentral aurora viewing unlikely tonight.

⚠️ Mat-Su Watch

Wasilla and Palmer area – Rain takes over tonight

  • Status: Wet roads with rain increasing later today.
  • When: Friday, with rain becoming widespread tonight.
  • Where it hits: Wasilla, Palmer and surrounding Mat-Su roads.
  • Why: Wasilla’s forecast calls for a high near 54°F, a 30% chance of rain today and a 100% chance of rain Friday night, with a low around 40°F.

💅 Reality check: This is a wet-road day. Give yourself room, keep the windshield clear and don’t let a little rain turn into a big hurry.

⚠️ Southcentral Watch (Anchorage Bowl & Hillside)

Anchorage Bowl – Rain through the daytime commute

  • Status: Rain likely.
  • When: Mainly late morning through the afternoon, with rain continuing tonight.
  • Where it hits: Anchorage Bowl and major commuter routes.
  • Why: Anchorage is forecast to reach 55°F, with rain likely mainly between 10 AM and 4 PM. Friday night brings an 80% chance of rain and a low around 44°F.

💅 Reality check: Wet pavement means longer stopping distances. Slow down enough to see what is happening ahead of you.

🚗✨ Parks Highway

Parks Highway @ Hawk Lane MP 53.2 -2 | Alaska 511

Wasilla is the closest forecast point for the Mat-Su end of the Parks corridor. This morning starts cloudy at 49°F, with a forecast high near 54°F. Rain becomes much more likely tonight.

🚙✨ Glenn Highway

Glenn Highway MP 12.8 @ Eagle River Bridge | Alaska 511

The Glenn is beginning the day with wet conditions around the Anchorage and Mat-Su ends. Palmer’s sunrise is slightly earlier than Anchorage’s, and tonight’s forecast remains wet.

🛻✨ Seward Highway

Seward Highway MP 120 – Huffman Road | Alaska 511

This is the corridor getting Memaw’s extra attention this morning.

Seward is reporting 48°F, light rain, fog/mist and 4-mile visibility. NWS forecasts rain today with a high near 53°F, followed by more rain tonight.

Seward reality check: Four miles of visibility is plenty to drive in, but it is not an invitation to drive like visibility is unlimited.

🚚✨ Sterling Highway – Soldotna

Sterling Hwy & Birch St – Park | Soldotna | Alaska 511

Kenai starts Friday at 47°F under overcast skies. NWS calls for rain and a high near 54°F, followed by a Friday-night low around 41°F and a chance of showers.

🚓✨ Knik Goose Bay Road

KGB & S Clapp – W Fairview Loop | Alaska 511

Wasilla’s 49°F start sets the tone here. The forecast reaches 54°F Friday, followed by rain tonight and a low around 40°F.

🌌 Aurora Forecast: Not Tonight

Kp 2 + clouds + rain = no aurora plans tonight. 🌧️

The Geophysical Institute forecasts low activity, and Southcentral’s cloudy, rainy skies aren’t cooperating anyway.

Memaw’s verdict: Stay inside. The aurora can wait. 💅

💅 Memaw’s Parting Words

Friday brought the rain, so grab your coffee, turn on those headlights and roll like you’ve got somewhere to be, but no need to prove it. ☕️🚗💨

Leave a little room, take the curves like you respect them, and let the folks in a hurry go audition for the next puddle.

Today’s POW/MIA Recognition Day is also a reminder that accounting for missing service members remains an ongoing national effort, not simply a remembrancAnd today, as the POW/MIA flag flies, we remember the promise behind it: no matter how many years have passed, the Americans who never made it home still have a place in our hearts, and their families still have a nation that remembers. The work to account for those who remain missing continues, because “missing” should never mean forgotten. 🇺🇸e of the past. 🇺🇸

The weekend is waiting, and it’s got better things planned than a fender bender. Drive alive from dawn to night, hon. 💖✨
