đ Something Wicked This Way Drives: Halloween Eve Brings Wind, Rain & Roadway Frights! đđ¨
Memaw’s Arctic Roll for Friday, October 30, 2026
Good morning, Alaska! Mother Nature apparently decided Halloween needed a little extra drama. We’ve got wind gusts strong enough to rearrange your yard, rain working overtime, and a few roads that deserve more respect than your average haunted house. đ¨đ§ď¸
And, guess what? October 30 is National Candy Corn Day, celebrating a sweet that has been part of America’s fall traditions for more than a century.

First introduced in the 1880s, candy corn was originally sold under the name âChicken Feed.â That was some clever candy branding long before Halloween treats became big business! đđŹ
Its familiar orange, yellow and white layers weren’t chosen just for a festive look. Each piece was designed to resemble a single kernel of corn, giving the candy the appearance of a miniature ear of corn. The design reflected a time when corn was a familiar part of American farm life and a symbol of the fall harvest.
The recipe combines sugar, corn syrup, fondant and marshmallow, with a thin coating of carnauba wax for its signature shine. More than a century later, candy corn remains a Halloween classic. So grab a handful and celebrate one of autumn’s sweetest traditions! đ
đ Memaw’s advice? Secure the outdoor decorations, keep both hands on the wheel, and don’t let a gust of wind send your Halloween plans flying.Â

đŚ Daily Verdict: Windy Roads, Wet Commutes & Aurora Hopes
đ˘đĄđ´
Roads: Wind and rain are the main concerns. Alaska 511’s alert listing currently reports no active statewide alerts; that does not mean every highway is clear.
Traffic: Check for changing conditions before departure. High-profile vehicles need extra caution in strong crosswinds.
Sky: Rain and extensive cloud cover are expected across much of Southcentral. Aurora activity is forecast to increase, but clouds could spoil the show.
Headlights: On! Rain, road spray and gray skies can reduce visibility. Make sure your headlights are on and give yourself room to see and be seen.
â ď¸ Mat-Su Watch
Lower Matanuska Valley â Wind Advisory
- Status: Wind Advisory in effect until 11:00 AM AKDT.
- Where: Wasilla, Palmer, Big Lake and the Knik Valley, including Butte.
- Wind: East winds 25â35 mph, with gusts up to 55 mph.
- Why it matters: Unsecured objects may blow around, isolated power outages are possible, and driving can become difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.
đ Reality check: Keep a firm grip on the wheel. Give trucks, trailers and other high-profile vehicles extra room, and secure anything outdoors that could take flight.
â ď¸ Southcentral Watch (Anchorage Bowl, Hillside & Seward)
Anchorage: Wind Advisory
- Status: Wind Advisory until 11:00 AM AKDT.
- When: Strongest gusts expected during the early morning, gradually easing through the afternoon.
- Where: Anchorage, with strongest gusts across east and northeast Anchorage, including Eagle River.
- Wind: Southeast winds 25â35 mph, gusting up to 55 mph.
Reality check: Crosswinds can push vehicles around. Slow down, keep both hands on the wheel and watch for debris.
Seward: Flood Advisory
- Status: Flood Advisory until 4:15 PM AKDT.
- Where: Seward and surrounding flood-prone areas.
- Why: Prolonged heavy rain, with another 1â2 inches possible today. Small streams, creeks, poor drainage areas and roadways may experience flooding and ponding.
đ Reality check: Never drive through water covering a roadway. Turn around rather than risk getting stranded.

đ⨠Glenn Highway

PalmerâEagle RiverâAnchorage corridor
High risk
Rain and strong winds will affect the lower corridor. The Sutton and Chickaloon end of the highway deserves additional attention because colder conditions can bring a rain-and-snow mix.

Special attention: Anchorage and Eagle River hillsides have a High Wind Warning through 11 AM. Higher elevations near Indian and Eagle River have much colder conditions, with snow and potentially dangerous wind gusts. DIFFICULT CONDITIONS

Alaska 511
Alaska 511âs live road map is showing orange âDifficultâ conditions along a broad stretch of Southcentral Alaska. The orange coverage runs along the Glenn Highway from the Knik River through Anchorage and continues south on the Seward Highway to Indian.
Thatâs a substantial stretch of the commute map, not just one trouble spot. Expect challenging driving conditions, slow down, leave extra following distance and give yourself extra time. Check Alaska 511 again before heading out because conditions can change.
đ Memaw’s Parting Words
Well, sugar, Friday has brought us a little wind, a lot of rain and enough Halloween atmosphere to make the ghosts feel right at home!

And, whether you love those little kernels or think they’re better suited for decorating than eating, celebrate your sweet tooth responsibly this National Candy Corn Day. Just remember, candy corn doesn’t belong on the accelerator, and neither does a lead foot on a wet highway.
Secure the Halloween decorations, watch those gusts, leave yourself extra stopping room, and keep your eyes on the road instead of the spooky scenery.
And if those northern lights decide to peek through the clouds tonight, consider that Alaska’s Halloween treat. No trick required!
Until next time, keep it between the ditches, keep the rubber side down, and don’t let Mother Nature steal your candy! đŹđ
