Tuesday is bringing Southcentral a little weather with an attitude. Rain is moving in, the wind is cranking up, and Anchorage is under a Wind Advisory through noon Wednesday with gusts of 40 to 50 mph possible. The Kenai Peninsula gets its turn this afternoon, while the Mat-Su is looking at 1 to 3 inches of rain through Wednesday afternoon.

So yes, grab the rain gear. Give yourself a little extra time. And if you drive a high-profile vehicle, today might be a good day to remember that Mother Nature also has opinions about steering.

As for tonight, the aurora forecast is promising. Kp 4 is on the menu. Now we just need the clouds to quit being the friend who shows up uninvited and blocks the view. 💅✨

🟢🟡🔴 Daily Verdict: Rain, Wind & Rough Roads Ahead

Roads: Wet roads will become the rule rather than the exception as rain spreads across Southcentral, with periods of heavy rain possible. Expect slower travel where water collects, and give yourself extra stopping distance. Check Alaska 511 before heading out for the latest incidents, construction and road conditions.

Traffic: The bigger issue today is weather rather than a blanket traffic mess. Wind becomes the troublemaker later, with gusts strong enough to make high-profile vehicles harder to handle, especially around Anchorage and the Kenai Peninsula.

Sky: A soggy, cloudy day is ahead, with rain developing or increasing through the day. Aurora activity is moderate, with peak Kp 4 forecast, but clouds and rain are likely to put a serious damper on the show across much of Southcentral tonight.

Matanuska-Susitna Valley – Heavy Rain

• Status: Significant rainfall expected
• When: Through Wednesday afternoon, with the heaviest rain expected late Tuesday morning through Tuesday night
• Where it hits: Willow, Talkeetna and areas draining the western Talkeetna Mountains
• Why: NWS expects 1 to 3 inches of rain Monday through Wednesday
• Reality check: Localized ponding is possible, and smaller tributaries including Willow Creek and Little Susitna may reach bankfull. 

⚠️ Southcentral Watch (Anchorage Bowl & Hillside)

Anchorage – Strong Southeast Winds

• Status: Wind Advisory
• When: Through noon Wednesday
• Where it hits: Anchorage Bowl, with the strongest winds initially focused on the south and west sides before spreading across the Bowl
• Why: A strong fall storm is pushing gusty southeast-to-south winds into Southcentral
• Reality check: NWS says gusts could reach 40 to 50 mph. High-profile vehicles are especially vulnerable.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute is forecasting moderate aurora activity Tuesday night, with a peak Kp around 4. If skies clear, displays could be visible as far south as the Southcentral region, including the possibility of low-on-the-horizon visibility around Soldotna. But tonight’s rain and cloud cover are the big spoiler.

In other words: the aurora may show up, but Mother Nature has put a cloud over the invitation.

🚶 The walk: A beautiful 1- to 2-mile community walk

👥 Everyone is welcome: Register as an individual, start a team, join an existing team, volunteer or come out to cheer on the walkers.

🌟 More than a walk: Local vendors, community resources, friends, families and neighbors will be there throughout the morning.

💜 The reason: Alzheimer’s affects far more than the person living with the disease. The event supports care and resources for caregivers and families, and raises money for research toward a cure.
