💅 Memaw’s Arctic Roll: Welcome to Alaska’s Other Season: Road Work

☕️ Good morning, sugar. The weather isn’t the boss of your commute today. Construction is.

Southcentral is waking up to decent driving conditions, long daylight hours, and mostly cooperative skies. The catch? Three major highway projects are now firmly part of the daily routine. Glenn drivers are still squeezing through the Peters Creek bridge merge, Seward travelers need to watch for overnight pilot cars at McHugh Creek, and Sterling commuters should budget extra time for flaggers and equipment between Mileposts 45 and 47.

The pavement is mostly behaving. But, the orange barrels and pot holes are making sure nobody gets too comfortable.

🟢🟡🟠 Daily Verdict: Easy Driving, Construction Everywhere

  • Roads: Generally good summer driving conditions across Southcentral.
  • Traffic: Normal commuter volumes, but expect slowdowns at Peters Creek, McHugh Creek, and Sterling Highway construction zones.
  • Sky: Plenty of daylight, mild temperatures, and a small chance for northern lights tonight if clouds cooperate.

🚧 Glenn Highway Construction Watch: Peters Creek Bridge Work Extended

  • Location: Peters Creek Bridge and northbound Birchwood Loop Road on-ramp
  • Status: Northbound (Mat-Su-bound) bridge remains closed
  • New Timeline: Closure extended approximately 45 additional days
  • Reason: Bridge deck replacement after discovery of weakened concrete beneath roadway
  • Current Traffic Pattern: All traffic continues to share the remaining open bridge using a zipper-merge configuration
  • Speed Reduction: 45 MPH through the construction zone
  • Lane Width: Narrow 11-foot lanes

👉🏿 Optional Detours:

⬆️ Northbound: Exit at Birchwood → Old Glenn Highway → Peters Creek → Glenn Highway
⬇️ Southbound: Exit at Peters Creek → Old Glenn Highway → Birchwood → Glenn Highway

💅 Reality check: This isn’t a short-term delay anymore. If the Glenn is part of your daily routine, plan on living with this traffic pattern for much of the summer. Weekend traffic may flow reasonably well, but peak commute periods can still back up quickly through the merge zone.

🚐💨 Seward Highway

🚧 Seward Highway Construction Watch: McHugh Creek Turn Lane Project

  • Location: Seward Highway MP 111.5–112 (McHugh Creek)
  • Status: Active construction zone
  • Project: New turn lane and highway improvements
  • Traffic Control: Nightly pilot cars
  • Pilot Car Schedule: 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM
  • Speed Limit: Reduced to 45 MPH
  • Commute Impact: Overnight delays possible
  • Contractor: Granite Construction
  • Agency: Alaska DOT&PF
  • Latest Update: Nightly pilot car operations underway

💅 Reality check: Seward is a moving construction zone, not a fixed one. Just because traffic was flowing yesterday doesn’t mean it’ll be flowing tonight. If you’re traveling after 8 PM, expect pilot cars, reduced speeds, and occasional delays through McHugh Creek.

🛻💨 Sterling Highway

🚧 Sterling Highway Construction Watch: MP 45–47 Reconstruction Project

  • Location: Sterling Highway MP 45–47
  • Status: Active construction zone
  • Project: Stage 3/1B highway improvements
  • Work Hours: Monday–Saturday, 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM
  • Traffic Control: Flaggers and pilot cars
  • Expected Delays: Up to 10 minutes
  • Construction Activity: Heavy equipment operating throughout corridor
  • Additional Work: Utility crews installing transmission line
  • Trail Access: All trails remain open
  • Contractor: QAP
  • Agency: Alaska DOT&PF
  • Latest Update: Daily traffic control operations continue

💅 Reality check: Ten minutes isn’t terrible. Ten minutes when you’re already running late feels like an eternity. Give yourself extra cushion through this stretch.

💅 Memaw’s Parting Words

The roads are behaving today. But, they are not in charge.

Three highways, three construction zones, and one simple truth: Orange barrels are now part of the commute whether we like it or not.

On the Glenn, it’s zipper merge season. Two lanes become one, and suddenly everyone turns into a traffic expert debating timing and turn order. It only works if we actually take turns instead of playing a rolling stare-down at 45 miles an hour. Ease off, let people in, and remember nobody gets bonus points for being first into an 11-foot lane that feels a lot smaller when you notice the river is not far off if you drift.

And sugar, drive alive from dawn to night 💖

Spring roads are open and Memaw’s got the soundtrack. 💅🚗 From the Parks to the Kenai and everywhere in between, drive alive from dawn to night with Memaw.
