Memaw’s Arctic Roll is rolling into Tuesday with a little bit of everything: patchy morning fog, a mild afternoon, a quiet northern lights forecast and the autumnal equinox arriving today. And because apparently one seasonal milestone wasn’t enough, it’s also National Hobbit Day.
So grab your cloak, your coffee and your keys, because we’re heading down the road. Early drivers get the fog. Afternoon drivers get the sunshine. Tonight’s aurora hunters get a Kp 2 forecast and a “maybe, if those skies cooperate” kind of night.
The autumnal equinox arrives at about 4:05 p.m. Alaska time today, officially ushering astronomical fall into the neighborhood.
🟢🟡🔴 Daily Verdict: Foggy Start, Sunny Finish & a Quiet Aurora
- Roads: Alaska 511 has an active northbound left-lane closure for road maintenance near New Seward Highway Mile 117, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:05 p.m. today. Other 511 camera observations available from Monday evening showed generally dry conditions on monitored Seward Highway locations.
- Traffic: The big commuter wrinkle today is the Mile 117 northbound lane closure. Plan for slower traffic through the work zone and merge early. Check Alaska 511 before leaving for the latest incidents, roadwork and camera conditions.
- Sky: Morning fog is the big player. NWS forecasts patchy fog before 10 a.m., then partly sunny skies with a high near 54°F. Tonight brings a 10% chance of showers before 7 p.m., then patchy fog after 1 a.m., with a low near 36°F.
- Aurora: Kp 2 and quiet activity are still the forecast. UAF notes that clear, dark skies are essential for viewing, and its forecast puts the better viewing farther north, with possible low-horizon visibility as far south as Talkeetna under favorable conditions.

A 511 camera at the Glenn/Parks interchange reported 51°F Monday evening, with a 50°F surface temperature and 14-mph east wind. Another Glenn camera near Gunsight Mountain reported 36°F. That spread is a good reminder that the highway has its own little weather personalities.

🌌 Tonight’s Aurora Reality Check
UAF’s Geophysical Institute has quiet aurora activity forecast for Tuesday, with Kp 2 through the evening and overnight period.
The forecast says quiet displays may be visible directly overhead from Utqiaġvik to Fort Yukon and potentially low on the horizon as far south as Talkeetna and Tok, provided skies are clear.
So for Southcentral Alaska, this is not an “everybody grab a lawn chair” forecast.
It’s more of a:

🍂 And Then There Were Seasons
Today isn’t just another Tuesday.
The autumnal equinox arrives around 4:05 p.m., bringing astronomical fall to the Northern Hemisphere. Daylight in Anchorage is down to about 12 hours and 14 minutes, with today’s official NWS sunrise at 7:45 a.m. and sunset at 7:59 p.m.
And because September 22 apparently needed another excuse to celebrate, it’s also Hobbit Day, marking the birthdays of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins in J.R.R. Tolkien’s fictional timeline.
Which means today’s commute officially qualifies as:
