💅 RATTLE YOUR JEWELRY, ALASKA! RAIN, WIND & A NORTHERN LIGHTS ENCORE

Memaw’s Arctic Roll for Wednesday, November 4, 2026

🎸 Good morning, sugar! Memaw has a little John Lennon inspiration for today’s commute. Back in 1963, during the Royal Variety Performance in London, Lennon introduced the Beatles’ final number with a now-famous quip: “Will the people in the cheaper seats clap your hands? And the rest of you, if you’ll just rattle your jewelry.” Well, honey, today we’re inviting Southcentral Alaska to join the chorus. JToday, Memaw’s asking Southcentral to join the chorus. Clap your hands, rattle your jewelry, and give those windshield wipers a workout! 💅✨

John Lennon and the Beatles in Hillegom, the Netherlands, June 5, 1964. Ringo Starr was out sick, so drummer Jimmie Nicol was filling in. During the televised performance, fans swarmed the stage and the Beatles beat a hasty retreat. Jimmie? He kept right on drumming, even after the others had left. Sometimes the show really must go on! Southcentral is caught between a weakening Gulf weather system and another round of unsettled conditions. Coastal communities are getting the wetter end of the deal, while Anchorage and the Mat-Su are looking at mostly cloudy skies, temperatures in the 40s and a chance of showers. There’s also a northern lights possibility tonight, provided those clouds cooperate.

☕️ Grab your coffee, check those headlights and let’s see what Mother Nature has on today’s program. 🚗💨

🚦 Daily Verdict

🟢🟡🔴 Easy Cruise, Wet Coastal Miles & a Northern Lights Encore?

Roads: No active alerts listed on Alaska 511. Watch for wet pavement, coastal rain and isolated slick spots farther north.

Traffic: No statewide alerts currently listed. Check individual routes and cameras before departure.

Sky: Mostly cloudy. Showers develop in parts of Southcentral this afternoon.

Headlights: Approximately 8 hours of daylight. Lights on, especially in rain and reduced visibility.

Aurora: UAF forecasts activity reaching Kp 4 this evening. Cloud cover could spoil the show.

Alaska 511 check, November 4: All listed roads are rated Good to Fair. No alerts listed at the time checked.

⚠️ Mat-Su Watch

Northern Susitna Valley – Freezing Rain and Possible Light Glaze

  • Status: Pockets of freezing rain possible.
  • When: Early Wednesday morning.
  • Where it hits: Willow north toward Talkeetna and west toward Skwentna.
  • Why: Warmer air moving over colder surface temperatures could produce freezing sprinkles and a light glaze.

💅 Reality check: The NWS identifies a better chance of icing north of Willow than around Palmer and Wasilla. If you’re traveling north, don’t assume the pavement is harmless just because temperatures are climbing.

The NWS says Anchorage, Palmer and Wasilla should see little or no impact from any freezing sprinkles, with temperatures hovering around freezing and northerly surface winds. Weather.gov

⚠️ Southcentral Watch (Anchorage Bowl & Hillside)

No separate high-impact Anchorage Bowl or Hillside road closure or disruption was confirmed in the sources checked this morning.

However, keep an eye on:

  • Wet pavement as afternoon showers develop.
  • Reduced visibility during rain.
  • Shaded pavement and elevated surfaces as temperatures approach freezing overnight.

💅 Reality check: No reason to panic, but don’t mistake a wet-looking road for a guaranteed safe one.

🌌 Tonight’s Northern Lights Forecast

Kp 4

UAF forecast: Moderate activity

Waning Crescent Moon 🌘

UAF’s supplied forecast calls for moderate aurora activity. Its forecast indicates displays may be visible overhead as far south as Talkeetna, with lower-horizon visibility possible farther south, including Soldotna.

The catch? Clouds.

Mostly cloudy conditions are forecast across much of Southcentral, with showers along the coast. A favorable Kp forecast cannot overcome a completely clouded-over sky.

My advice: If you get a break in the clouds, step outside and look north.

💅 Memaw’s Parting Words

Well, hon, that’s today’s performance! The coastal crowd gets the rain, the Mat-Su gets a little wind, and the rest of us get to practice our best rainy-day driving.

Remember, you can clap your hands and rattle your jewelry, but on these roads, it’s your headlights that deserve the applause! 💅👏🚗💨

John Lennon in 1974, promoting Walls and Bridges. The album gave Lennon his first solo No. 1 hit in the United States, “Whatever Gets You Thru the Night,” with a little help from Elton John. Elton bet the song would top the charts, and Lennon promised to join him onstage if it did. The song made good on its promise, and so did John. A fitting thought to take with us: whatever gets you through the night, and safely down the road, Southcentral! 💅 Photo credit: Bob Gruen / Capitol Records, via Wikimedia Commons. Public domain.

Keep your eyes open, your distance generous and your patience longer than the daylight and: Drive alive from dawn to night, friends. 💖

Whether you’re clapping from the cheap seats or rattling your jewelry from the fancy ones, make some noise for a beautiful Alaska day ahead. And if the northern lights show up tonight, they’ll deserve a standing ovation! 💅✨
