Memaw’s Fuel-Saver Reality Check
At $4.98 per gallon for regular in Anchorage and $6.12 statewide for diesel, every unnecessary mile has a little attitude problem. A Circle K station in Anchorage posted prices Tuesday of $4.89 for regular and $6.09 for diesel, slightly below the reported Anchorage average for regular, while diesel was essentially in line with the statewide record-level average.
- Combine errands instead of making three separate cross-town loops.
- Use a block heater or cabin preheat when appropriate rather than long idling; modern vehicles generally do not need an extended warmup.
- Keep tires inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure. Soft tires waste fuel and money.
- Ease into acceleration, maintain steady speed, and leave enough following distance that you do not have to brake-and-gas your way through traffic.
- Clear fogged windows before rolling, but avoid running defrost and other power draws harder or longer than necessary once visibility is secure.
