Memaw’s Arctic Roll: Sunshine, Construction and Phantom Cars

💅 Good morning, Southcentral. Monday is serving up sunshine, chilly starts and a little construction to keep everybody honest.
Anchorage is headed for 53°F, while Wasilla and Kenai could reach 55°F. Seward gets the day’s windier, wetter treatment, and the Sterling Highway has construction, blasting, pilot cars and expected 10-minute delays between MP45 and MP47.
But before you roll, Memaw has a safety reminder that doesn’t need a weather forecast: turn your headlights on. Every time.
Alaska law requires headlights from 30 minutes after sunset until 30 minutes before sunrise, and also during the day when atmospheric conditions or insufficient light make people or vehicles difficult to see from 1,000 feet. The Alaska DMV also recommends using headlights at dusk and whenever visibility is poor.

- Roads: Alaska 511 reports active roadwork on the Sterling Highway between MP 45 and 47, including blasting operations, flagging, pilot cars, construction equipment and expected 10-minute delays.
- Traffic: Plan for those Sterling Highway work-zone delays during the active construction window. Check Alaska 511 again before leaving because road conditions and incidents can change.
- Sky: Mostly sunny today around Anchorage and the Mat-Su. Clouds increase in parts of Southcentral tonight.
- Headlights: Turn them on. Especially around dawn and dusk. Don’t be one of Memaw’s phantom cars.

Alaska 511 reports crews and equipment working between MP 45 and 47. Be alert for blasting operations Monday-Friday and construction crews in the area Monday-Saturday from 6 AM to 7 PM.

The Alaska 511 notice was last updated September 25, 2026, at 1:40 PM. The contractor is QAP, with Alaska DOT&PF as the agency.
💅 Reality check: If you’re traveling through MP 45–47 during the work window, build extra time into your trip. The 10-minute delay is part of today’s commute, not a surprise to be discovered after you’re already there.

🌌 Aurora Forecast for Tonight
The University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute is forecasting low aurora activity tonight.
The current Kp is 2, with the evening forecast remaining around Kp 2. At 10 PM, low aurora activity is forecast.
If skies are clear, low-level displays may be visible overhead from Utqiaġvik to Fairbanks and potentially low on the northern horizon as far south as Anchorage and Juneau.
🌝 There is also a full moon tonight, which can make faint aurora more difficult to spot.
Yes, it’s worth looking. No, Memaw isn’t promising you the northern-lights spectacular of the century. That’s called managing expectations.
And if the aurora doesn’t give you enough reason to look up tonight, Southcentral has another good reason to get out and see the scenery while there’s still plenty of daylight. Fall color season is underway, and a scenic drive can be an outing all by itself.
This gorgeous view from **Tern Lake on the Sterling Highway at MP 37** is a pretty good reason to take the scenic route. The colors are changing quickly, and a drive through Southcentral can turn an ordinary day into a sightseeing trip without much extra effort.

💅 That’s your Monday roll. Sunshine should make for a pretty decent commute in most places, but Seward’s wind, morning showers and the Sterling work zone deserve your full attention.
And, sugar. Remember Memaw’s golden rule: headlights on, every time. You may see perfectly well, but the driver coming toward you needs to see you.
Take it easy through the work zones, give those pilot cars room to do their jobs, and leave yourself a little extra time where delays are expected.
