📚 A Little Magic for the Morning
Before Memaw sends you out the door: today is National Open the Magic Day, a day devoted to read-alouds, picture books and those wonderful “confetti moments” when a reader suddenly finds a story that feels like it belongs to them.
And Memaw has a pretty special family reading story of her own.
My grandfather left school after the third grade because he had to go to work in the fields. He was one of 10 children. My grandmother taught him how to read, and he didn’t read his first book until he was an adult in his 40s.
That book was Jack London’s The Call of the Wild.
He never stopped reading after that.
So when I talk about the magic of books, I mean it. Sometimes the right book doesn’t just entertain you. Sometimes it opens a door you didn’t even know was there.

🟢🟡🔴 Daily Verdict: Windy Cruise with a Hillside Warning
- Roads: Wet-weather and wind concerns build through Southcentral today, with the biggest driving issue along Turnagain Arm, the Anchorage Hillside and South Anchorage. NWS says southeast winds there will reach 25–35 mph with gusts of 40–55 mph. The Anchorage Bowl, Knik River Valley, Butte and Palmer can see 10–25 mph winds with gusts of 25–35 mph, with isolated 40 mph gusts possible around Butte and Palmer Friday afternoon.
- Traffic: Alaska 511’s live map is the place to check for active incidents, closures and work-zone changes before you roll. Its system distinguishes incidents, roadwork, temporary work zones, closures and weather incidents.
- Sky: Tonight is not exactly rolling out the red carpet for the aurora. UAF’s Geophysical Institute forecast calls for low activity, with the supplied forecast reaching Kp 4 around 7 p.m., then dropping to Kp 3 around 10 p.m. Clouds are the bigger problem for Southcentral, so a decent geomagnetic number does not guarantee a view. The Geophysical Institute notes that darkness and at least partially clear skies are required to see the aurora.
⚠️ Southcentral Watch (Anchorage Bowl & Hillside)
Anchorage Hillside, South Anchorage & Turnagain Arm – Strong Southeast Winds
- Status: Windy conditions developing
- When: Increasing today, strongest from this afternoon through tonight
- Where it hits: Turnagain Arm, Anchorage Hillside and South Anchorage
- Why: A front lifting north across the Gulf of Alaska is bringing strong southeast winds
- What NWS says: 25–35 mph winds with gusts of 40–55 mph
- Reality check: If you are driving a high-profile vehicle, towing, or carrying anything that can become airborne, today is a white-knuckle kind of day. Slow down and give the wind room to make its point.
The Anchorage Bowl and Knik River Valley through Butte and Palmer are not getting off scot-free either. NWS expects 10–25 mph winds with gusts of 25–35 mph and says isolated gusts to 40 mph are possible around Butte and Palmer Friday afternoon.
🚙✨ Parks Highway
The Parks gets a relatively quiet weather setup through the Mat-Su, but the wind starts becoming part of the conversation this afternoon. Wasilla’s NWS forecast calls for mostly cloudy and a high near 56°F, with east winds around 10 mph today. Tonight brings a slight chance of rain, mostly cloudy skies and a low around 43°F.

The Glenn is where Memaw wants a little extra attention today. The Mat-Su side stays relatively mild, but NWS expects stronger southeast winds through the Knik River Valley, with gusts generally reaching 25–35 mph and isolated gusts to 40 mph around Butte and Palmer this afternoon.

🚐✨ Seward Highway
This is the wet and windy one. Seward is already reporting light rain, and the forecast calls for rain likely today with a high near 51°F, followed by rain tonight and a low around 43°F. NWS expects as much as three-quarters of an inch of new precipitation tonight in the Seward area.
The Girdwood portion deserves special attention as well, with rain/drizzle and southeast winds in the local forecast.

Homer is wetter still, with rain likely mainly after 10 a.m., a high near 55°F and east winds of 15–25 mph with gusts to 35 mph.
