🛻💨 Brake Lights, Finally Green & Friday Roads 💅

Memaw’s Arctic Roll for Friday, May 22, 2026

💖 Good morning, sugar. Spring finally showed up on the Alaska 511 traffic cams today like it got held up at the door for a while and then decided to come in all at once. That sharp, unmistakable Alaska green is starting to take over the valleys and road edges—brighter than it should be this early, especially after how cold May has been. Snow is gone from most of the main corridors, but what’s left behind is that in-between season look: clean pavement, fresh color, and just enough lingering chill in the shaded spots to remind you winter didn’t fully lose yet.

It’s one of those days where the drive looks better than it behaves. The scenery is turning the corner into real spring, but the roads are still dealing with construction zones, wet patches, and the usual Friday shuffle.

🟢🟡🔴 Daily Verdict: Wet Roads & Construction Patience Required
Roads: Mostly wet with isolated slick spots in shaded elevations and active construction slowdowns
Traffic: Glenn and Sterling corridor projects remain the biggest commute headache today
Sky: Gray, damp, and cloudy enough to mostly smother aurora visibility tonight

🚙💨 Parks Highway

Parks Highway @ Hawk Lane MP 53.2 | Alaska 511

Afternoon5244Mostly manageable travel with occasional standing water near shoulders🟢 Low
Evening4739Cooler temps may create slick patches in shaded curves🟡 Moderate
Sunrise & SunsetSunrise 4:43 AMSunset 11:08 PMLong daylight helps visibility but wet-road glare remains annoying🟢 Low
Aurora Forecast for TonightKp 2Mostly cloudy skies expectedOdds stay slim unless clouds briefly break overnight🟡 Moderate

🚗💨 Glenn Highway

Time of DayHi Temperatures (°F)Lo Temperatures (°F)Driving TipsRoad Risk Level
Morning4437Bridge work zone creates predictable backups into Anchorage🟡 Moderate
Afternoon5043Mat-Su outbound flow stacks quickly through lane shifts🟡 Moderate
Evening4538Narrow lanes + wet pavement reduce reaction time margins🟡 Moderate

🚧 Glenn Highway Construction Watch

  • Northbound bridge CLOSED (45-day project starting April 18)
  • Traffic shifted to southbound bridge
  • 45 MPH work zone with 11 ft lanes
  • 10 AM–12 PM weekday one-lane directional restriction during barrier shifts
  • AM: 2 lanes Anchorage-bound | PM: 2 lanes Mat-Su-bound

🚧 Birchwood Loop Northbound On-Ramp Closure

  • CLOSED (45-day closure starting April 18)
  • Northbound access blocked
  • Detour via Old Glenn Highway

💅 Reality check: This corridor is operating in “nothing moves fast anymore” mode. Expect compression points where traffic stacks without warning.

🚐💨 Seward Highway

Seward Highway @ Bird Point MP 96.3 | Alaska 511

Time of DayHi Temperatures (°F)Lo Temperatures (°F)Driving TipsRoad Risk Level
Morning4339Rain showers and low clouds reduce visibility along Turnagain Arm🟡 Moderate
Afternoon4842Gusty crosswinds + roadside crews slow flow near curves🟡 Moderate
Evening4439Moose activity increases in low-light coastal stretches🟡 Moderate
Sunrise & SunsetSunrise 4:36 AMSunset 11:02 PMRapid cloud shifts along the coastline🟡 Moderate

🚧 McHugh Creek Turn Lane Project (MP 111.5–112)

  • Crews active roadside
  • No work May 23–25 (Memorial Day weekend)
  • Starting May 31: nightly pilot cars 8 PM–5 AM
  • Speed reduced to 45 MPH beginning May 31 (MP 111–112)
  • Contractor: Granite Construction (907-344-2593)
  • DOT&PF: 907-344-7253

💅 Reality check: Turnagain Arm travel is already unpredictable. Add pilot cars and lane control and timing stops being flexible.

🛻💨 Sterling Highway

Sterling Highway @ Russian River Ferry MP 54.8 | Alaska 511

Time of DayHi Temperatures (°F)Lo Temperatures (°F)Driving TipsRoad Risk Level
Morning4638Active work zones create unpredictable slowdowns🟡 Moderate
Afternoon5344Tourist + construction traffic stacking through Kenai corridor🟡 Moderate
Evening4739Lane shifts + wildlife crossings require full attention🟡 Moderate
Sunrise & SunsetSunrise 4:31 AMSunset 10:58 PMLong daylight masks how slow traffic actually is🟡 Moderate
Aurora Forecast for TonightKp 2Cloudy conditions persistLow visibility for aurora🟡 Moderate

🚧 Juneau Creek Bridge Project (MP 45–60)

  • Large-scale corridor reconstruction
  • Reduced speeds, lane shifts, intermittent traffic stops
  • Tourism-season congestion expected through summer

🚧 Sterling Rural Standards Upgrade Project

  • Multi-year corridor rebuild (through 2028)
  • Lane shifts, drainage, paving, and pathway construction

🚧 MP 99 Pavement Testing / Coring (completed window ending May 22)

  • 45 MPH reduced speed zone
  • Single-lane and moving work zones during operation window

💅 Reality check: This corridor is in full “don’t expect normal travel for years” mode. Stack construction + tourism and delays become structural, not occasional.

💅 Memaw’s Parting Words

Today is not a dramatic weather day. It’s a “pay attention or pay for it in brake pads” kind of day. The roads are wet, the construction is active, and the biggest variable out there is how fast people forget physics when they see an open stretch of highway.

And while you’re out there doing the Southcentral shuffle, take a second to actually notice that electric Alaska green finally spreading across the valleys and hillsides. It’s the kind of spring color that only shows up here after the long cold stretch finally lets go. It doesn’t stick around long, so don’t miss it between stoplights and brake taps.

💖 Drive like everyone else around you is distracted, because statistically, they are.

Now, let’s drive alive from dawn to night, sugar! 🎶

Spring roads are open and Memaw’s got the soundtrack. 💅🚗 From the Parks to the Kenai and everywhere in between, drive alive from dawn to night with Memaw.
