🌄 Memaw’s Artic Roll: Golden Skies with a Chance of Northern Lights

By Gina Hill | Alaska Headline Living | March 30, 2026

💅 Good morning, Southcentral road warriors. It’s Seward’s Day, celebrating when America bought this entire wild place in 1867 for $7.2 million, about two cents an acre. Critics called it Seward’s Folly, though you could also call it Russia’s Folly. Either way, today that same price wouldn’t even cover a mile of this summer’s Glenn Highway Peters Creek Bridge project. Best real estate deal in history if you ask the folks on the roads today.

💅 Most of today’s commute looks manageable across the region. Expect typical late-March conditions: cold mornings, some slick patches where overnight frost hangs on, and melting edges during the afternoon. Bridges and shaded curves remain the usual suspects, so give yourself space and keep that coffee steady. And, keep an eye out for Tundra. 🫎💖

🫎 “Blink and I’m gone. Or suddenly in your lane. Drive safe, friends.” – Tundra the Moose 🫎

If the clouds cooperate tonight, you might even get a reward for a safe drive home. The aurora forecast suggests a modest chance of northern lights over Southcentral. Not a guaranteed show, but enough that sky watchers might want to peek outside after dark.

🟢🟡🔴 Daily Verdict: Easy Cruise with a Northern Lights Bonus
Roads: Mostly clear with isolated icy spots in shaded areas
Traffic: Typical Monday flow with no major corridor disruptions
Sky: If clouds thin tonight, the aurora may peek through

💖 Memaw’s Parting Words

Harbor hustle in Seward, Alaska, as boats bob gently in the bay | Alaska Headline Living ©

On this Seward’s Day, remember William H. Seward’s $7.2 million purchase that brought Alaska into the Union. Some called it Seward’s Folly, though really it was Russia’s Folly, since everyone underestimated just how wild, vast, and valuable this place would turn out to be.

🌄 Spring sunshine is creeping back into Alaska, but winter still has a few tricks up its sleeve. The smartest drivers know this season is a balancing act between melting snow and sneaky ice.

Give the road a little respect today, leave space between bumpers, and keep your eyes on both the pavement and the sky. If those northern lights decide to dance tonight, it’ll be a pretty fine ending to a Monday. 💖 💖

Tundra’s Road Wisdom of the Day “If it’s dark and you see long legs by the road, ease off the gas. We moose are terrible at traffic.”
