Traffic delays expected Friday during avalanche work on Seward Highway

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Jan. 30, 2026) – Drivers traveling the Seward Highway between Girdwood and Bird should expect significant delays Friday as crews conduct avalanche hazard reduction work, officials said.

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities said motorists could face intermittent closures lasting 45 to 60 minutes between mileposts 90 and 99 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Delays may last longer if avalanche debris reaches the roadway and requires cleanup.

The department urged travelers to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and check 511.alaska.govfor real-time updates and road conditions.
