Christmas Costs a Little More This Year. But Love Is Still Free.

Holiday shopping season is arriving, and many families are finding ways to celebrate without stretching their budgets.

Christmas is a season of giving, but this year, shoppers may be thinking a little harder about what goes into their carts and under the tree.

Inflation, grocery bills, heating costs, and everyday expenses can make holiday spending a challenge. And Alaska families have their own budget pressures to consider.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, national consumer prices were 3.7% higher in September 2026 than a year earlier. In the Anchorage area, which includes the Mat-Su Borough, prices increased 3.3% over the year ending in August. Energy costs were a significant contributor in both reports.

Meanwhile, the National Retail Federation forecasts that holiday retail sales in November and December will reach approximately $1.013 trillion nationwide, a 4.2% increase over 2025.

That doesn’t mean every household has more money to spend. It means holiday shopping remains a big part of the economy, even as consumers look for ways to save.

Making Christmas Merry Without Breaking the Budget

A little planning can make a difference:

  • Set a spending limit before shopping.
  • Compare prices instead of assuming every sale is a bargain.
  • Watch delivery fees and impulse purchases.
  • Consider homemade gifts and shared experiences.
  • Avoid taking on credit card debt for presents.

The holidays don’t have to be a competition over who spends the most. Sometimes the most meaningful gifts are the ones that cost very little. A shared meal, a phone call, a homemade present, or simply making time for someone can mean more than anything wrapped in expensive paper.

The Best Things Are Still Free

At Alaska Headline Living, we’re getting an early start on Christmas music with a little reminder for the season:

🎄🎶 Christmas may cost a little more this year, but love, kindness, laughter, and time spent with the people who matter most are still priceless.

Because the best things about Christmas don’t come with a price tag. ❤️
And yes, Mariah, it’s almost time. 😂🎶

The price of presents may go up, but the value of love never goes on sale.

And besides, somebody has to give Mariah Carey permission to defrost. 😀 🎶

Merry Christmas season, Alaska! ❤️🎄
