☕️ Good morning, Arctic Rollers! 💅🚗💨 Thursday starts with sunshine and 50-ish temperatures across much of Southcentral, but Memaw has one important reminder before you trust that pretty forecast: the road gets the final word.The Alaska 511 camera at Tern Lake, Sterling Highway MP 37, is showing substantial fog this morning. So if you’re heading south, don’t assume sunshine in Anchorage means sunshine all the way to the Kenai Peninsula.
Meanwhile, NWS has a bigger change brewing. Strong southeast winds begin building tonight, with the strongest winds expected Friday into Friday night. Turnagain Arm and the Anchorage Hillside could see 40 to 55 mph gusts, while the Anchorage Bowl and Knik River Valley could see gusts of 25 to 35 mph, with isolated 40 mph gusts around Butte and Palmer.
🌌 ☁️ Also tonight, there’s a little competition for your attention: UAF’s Geophysical Institute is forecasting moderate aurora activity, with the forecast reaching Kp 4. Unfortunately, Southcentral’s skies are expected to cloud up tonight. The lights may be there. The clouds may simply refuse to cooperate.
🌋 One more Alaska history note for your coffee: September 24, 1918, is the day President Woodrow Wilson established Katmai National Monument. The designation followed scientific expeditions to the landscape transformed by the enormous 1912 Novarupta eruption. The original monument encompassed about 1,700 square miles.
And here’s the fun part: decades later, that seemingly alien volcanic landscape became an Apollo astronaut training ground. NASA sent astronauts to the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes in 1965 and 1966 to practice geology in terrain considered similar to the lunar surface.

💅 Reality check: Thursday is the calm before the wind. If you’re towing or driving something tall, Friday deserves your attention.

The Alaska 511 camera at Tern Lake, Sterling Highway MP 37, is showing quite foggy conditions this morning.
That matters.
The Kenai forecast may call for sunshine and a high near 53°F, but a driver doesn’t experience a forecast. A driver experiences the road in front of the windshield.
Kenai starts at 27°F this morning, with sunny conditions and a high near 53°F. Tonight brings increasing clouds and a low around 41°F.
Homer is warmer at 36°F, with a high near 55°F, increasing clouds and rain developing mainly after 4 AM Friday.

UAF’s Geophysical Institute is forecasting moderate aurora activity tonight, with the forecast reaching approximately Kp 4 during the overnight period. That’s enough to make the sky interesting if conditions cooperate.
But here’s the catch: clouds are increasing across Southcentral tonight.
Anchorage goes from sunny today to increasingly cloudy tonight, while Seward is already trending wetter and Homer has rain arriving early Friday. So don’t stare at the Kp number and assume you’re guaranteed a show.
Clear sky + aurora activity = look up.
Cloudy sky + aurora activity = admire the forecast from your couch. 🌌

Thursday is giving us the good stuff first.
Sunshine.
Fifties.
A reasonably civilized commute.
But Tern Lake has already issued the first reality check of the morning. The Sterling Highway camera is showing fog, and that’s your reminder that Southcentral weather can change dramatically between one end of a highway and the other.
Then comes tonight’s wind setup.
NWS is watching 40 to 55 mph gusts around Turnagain Arm and the Anchorage Hillside, with strong winds also developing through the Knik River Valley.
So enjoy today’s sunshine, but don’t let it convince you Friday will behave.
🧠 And while you’re rolling, remember that 108 years ago today, Katmai became a national monument after scientists documented the extraordinary volcanic landscape left by the 1912 eruption.
That same barren volcanic landscape eventually became a training ground for Apollo astronauts. NASA sent groups to Katmai in 1965 and 1966 to practice field geology in terrain that looked remarkably lunar.
