Ten things to put on your Alaska calendar 🥳

Fall is officially here, and Alaska has a calendar full of things to do, learn, make, hear and, in one case, responsibly recycle.

From a karaoke fundraiser in Wasilla to a governor candidate forum in Cordova, a job fair in Fairbanks, art in Anchorage and a seal skin sewing workshop in Utqiaġvik, here are 10 events happening around the state.

👉🏿 Team Alaska Karaoke World Finals Fundraiser

8–10 p.m. | Schwabenhof, 4115 E. Palmer-Wasilla Highway, Wasilla

Grab the microphone and help send Alaska karaoke qualifier Kaitie to Las Vegas for the World Finals.

The evening features karaoke, fun and taco soup, with proceeds supporting the karaoke hosts and Kaitie’s trip.

👉🏿 Alaska Governor Candidate Forum on the Outdoors

The Alaska Outdoor Alliance will host a gubernatorial candidate forum focused on outdoor recreation during the 11th Annual Confluence Summit in Cordova.

Gubernatorial candidates are invited to share their views on how outdoor recreation fits into their visions for Alaska’s future.

The event is part of the 11th Annual Confluence Summit, which runs September 22–24.

👉🏿 Art Brings Us Together

Who says you have to start painting young? Rhonda Scott picked up the brush at 50 and has been adding color to Alaska ever since. Now she’s putting that creativity to work for a cause close to her heart, bringing art, connection and a little more color into the lives of Alaskans living with dementia. 🎨

10 a.m.–noon | Alzheimer’s Resource Alaska, 1750 Abbott Road, Anchorage

This free, dementia-friendly painting workshop brings together eight clients and eight caregivers for a step-by-step creative experience.

Local Alaska artist Rhonda Scott leads the class, with all materials provided. The workshop encourages creativity, relaxation, self-expression and social connection.

Artwork created during the class will be displayed and available for purchase at Denali Graphics.

Got a song, a story, a poem, a guitar, or just the courage to grab a microphone? Open Mic Night at Black Birch Books welcomes singers, speakers, strummers and anyone ready to share a little talent.

Sound equipment is available, the space is handicap accessible, and additional accommodations can be requested. The event continues through the generosity of Mick Adams, whose kindness continues to be remembered through the people he encouraged and helped.

👉🏿 Jason Mewes: Diary of a Man-Child in Anchorage

Before he was telling Hollywood stories onstage, Jason Mewes was Jay, the wisecracking half of Jay and Silent Bob. Now the New Jersey native is bringing his “Man-Child” tour to Anchorage, where the stories are likely to be just as colorful as the language. 🎬🎤

Jason Mewes, comedian, actor and one half of Jay and Silent Bob, brings his stories of Hollywood and podcasting to downtown Anchorage.

Doors open at 6 p.m. The show is 18+ with adult content. Food and a full bar will be available for purchase.

Tickets are very limited. Seating is general admission table seating unless a reserved table for four was purchased.

👉🏿 Free Kodiak Electronic Recycling Event

10 a.m.–3 p.m. both days | City of Kodiak Storage Yard, Near Island

Got an old television, computer, phone, cable collection or other electronic clutter taking up space?

KANA, the City of Kodiak, Matson, Caring for Alaska, Zender Environmental and Backhaul Alaska are hosting a free electronic recycling event for residents.

Businesses and anyone bringing large quantities should contact Lisa Fox in advance to schedule a drop-off.

👉🏿 Alaska Wildflower Garden Work Party

Forget the lawn. Alaska’s native wildflowers are the stars of this garden party. 🌼 Volunteers will get their hands dirty at Campbell Creek Science Center, tending native plants and learning which wildflowers are happiest growing in Southcentral Alaska.

9 a.m.–noon | Campbell Creek Science Center, Anchorage

The Alaska Native Plant Society and Bureau of Land Management–Alaska are looking for volunteers to help maintain Campbell Creek Science Center’s native wildflower gardens.

Gardening equipment is provided. Volunteers can learn about gardening with native plants and the wildflowers that thrive in Southcentral Alaska while helping with stewardship on public lands.

👉🏿 Seal Skin Cross Bag Sewing With Sew Yup’ik

There’s a whole lot more than needle and thread behind Sew Yup’ik. 🧵 Quluqaaq, also known as Nikki Corbett, has spent more than a decade traveling Alaska teaching traditional Yup’ik sewing arts, turning every stitch into a little lesson in culture, connection and keeping knowledge moving forward. Now that’s sewing with a purpose.

5–9 p.m. | Building 366, Iñupiaq Studies, Iḷisaġvik College

Sew Yup’ik brings a seal skin cross bag sewing workshop to Iḷisaġvik College.

The class is limited to eight participants and is open to Alaska Native participants.
