💅🌧️ Rain, Roadwork & Respect Your Elders
Memaw’s Arctic Roll for Friday, August 21, 2026
It’s National Senior Citizens Day, so Memaw is taking today’s commute personally: we’ve lived through enough bad roads, questionable forecasts and “I know a shortcut” decisions to know better. 💅 Friday brings scattered showers across Southcentral, cloudy skies and temperatures mostly in the 50s and low 60s. The roads are generally manageable, but wet pavement, reduced visibility in spots and active construction mean this is not the morning to drive like you’re auditioning for NASCAR.
🟢🟡🔴 Daily Verdict: Mostly Green, With a Few Yellow Patches for Showers and Roadwork
- Roads: Mostly manageable, but fog is currently visible at the 2nd Knik River Bridge on the Glenn Highway at MP 31.1. Add wet pavement and active construction to the mix, and this is a morning for extra following distance, not extra speed.
- Traffic: No verified all-clear from Alaska 511’s text-accessible live feed this morning. Active construction and maintenance alerts are confirmed, so allow extra time through work zones.
- Sky: Cloudy to partly sunny today, with scattered showers across Southcentral. More clouds and showers return tonight.
- Aurora: Low activity. Kp 2 tonight. If skies clear, low-level aurora may be visible as far south as Anchorage, but tonight’s clouds are the big spoiler. 💅

🚙💨 Parks Highway

| Afternoon | 61 | 50 | Showers remain possible. Expect changing pavement conditions and reduced traction where rain falls. | 🟡 Moderate |
| Evening | 61 | 50 | Increasing clouds with scattered showers. Leave extra following distance on wet pavement. | 🟡 Moderate |
Sunrise & Sunset: Wasilla: 6:20 AM / 9:29 PM
Aurora Forecast for Tonight: Kp 2. Low aurora activity forecast. If skies clear, low-level displays may be visible, but clouds are the bigger obstacle tonight.
🏎️💨 Glenn Highway

| Time of Day | Hi Temperatures (°F) | Lo Temperatures | Driving Tips | Road Risk Level |
| Morning | 61 | 50 | Cloudy and cool across the Mat-Su corridor. Allow extra room if showers reach the roadway. | 🟡 Moderate |
| Afternoon | 61 | 50 | Scattered showers are possible. Watch for spray and changing traction. | 🟡 Moderate |
| Evening | 61 | 50 | Increasing clouds and scattered showers. Keep headlights on when visibility drops. | 🟡 Moderate |

Aurora Forecast for Tonight: Kp 2. Low activity. Cloud cover is likely to be the limiting factor.
⚠️ Glenn Highway – Knik River Bridge Fog
Location: 2nd Knik River Bridge, MP 31.1
Condition: Fog visible on the Alaska 511 camera
When: This morning
💅 Reality check: Visibility can change quickly around the bridge. Slow down, increase following distance and use headlights. Don’t outrun what you can see.
🚜💨 Seward Highway

| Time of Day | Hi Temperatures (°F) | Lo Temperatures | Driving Tips | Road Risk Level |
| Morning | 55 | 49 | Showers are likely early near Seward. Expect wet pavement and locally reduced visibility. | 🟡 Moderate |
| Afternoon | 55 | 49 | Mostly cloudy with showers possible. Watch for spray and construction activity. | 🟡 Moderate |
| Evening | 55 | 49 | Showers likely again, with the overnight low around 49°F. | 🟡 Moderate |
Sunrise & Sunset: Girdwood: 6:22 AM / 9:35 PM
Aurora Forecast for Tonight: Kp 2. Low activity forecast. Clouds and showers make viewing unlikely along much of the corridor.
🚧 Roadwork / Maintenance
Seward Hwy MP 69 to 75: Road maintenance is active in both directions through October 2. Expect short delays, flagging and lane-closure operations Monday through Friday from 6:30 AM to 6:00 PM.
Seward Hwy MP 90 to 99: Pavement Preservation Phase 1 remains active. Expect delays, nightly lane closures, flagging and/or pilot-car operations throughout the work zone. The speed limit has been reduced to 55 MPH. Construction equipment and personnel are also working along the adjacent shared-use pathway.
💅 Memaw’s reality check: This is construction country today. Don’t budget your trip to the minute. Budget it to the construction crew.
🚜💨 Sterling Highway

| Time of Day | Hi Temperatures (°F) | Lo Temperatures | Driving Tips | Road Risk Level |
| Morning | 53 | 51 | Scattered showers before 10 AM around Homer. Roads may be wet with reduced visibility in heavier showers. | 🟡 Moderate |
| Afternoon | 58 | 51 | Mostly cloudy with isolated showers possible. Watch for spray and construction activity. | 🟡 Moderate |
| Evening | 58 | 51 | Increasing clouds. Rain becomes more likely later overnight. | 🟡 Moderate |
Sunrise & Sunset: Homer: 6:37 AM / 9:39 PM
Aurora Forecast for Tonight: Kp 2. Low activity. Southern Alaska has a slim chance of seeing low-level aurora if clouds break, but don’t make plans around it.
🚧 Roadwork / Maintenance
STERLING HIGHWAY MP 45 to 47: Be alert for blasting operations Monday through Friday and construction crews Monday through Saturday from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Flagging occurs during blasting operations. Expect 5 to 10 minute delays and watch for construction equipment entering and leaving the roadway. All trails within the corridor are open.
💅 Memaw’s reality check: When the sign says blasting, Memaw says you wait. Those five to 10 minutes are cheaper than becoming part of the construction project.
🛻💨 Knik Goose Bay Road

| Time of Day | Hi Temperatures (°F) | Lo Temperatures | Driving Tips | Road Risk Level |
| Morning | 61 | 50 | Cool, cloudy conditions with scattered showers possible. Watch for wet pavement. | 🟢 Low |
| Afternoon | 61 | 50 | Showers may pop up. Give yourself extra stopping distance. | 🟡 Moderate |
| Evening | 61 | 50 | Increasing clouds and scattered showers. Visibility may vary. | 🟡 Moderate |
Sunrise & Sunset: Anchorage: 6:24 AM / 9:39 PM
Aurora Forecast for Tonight: Kp 2. Low activity forecast. If clouds cooperate, low-level aurora could be visible toward the northern horizon.
🌦️ Today’s Southcentral Weather Check
Anchorage: Overcast and 55°F at the early-morning observation. Scattered showers are expected mainly after 1 PM, followed by increasing clouds tonight. High 62°F, low 52°F.
Wasilla: Overcast and 53°F early this morning. Scattered showers, patchy fog before 10 AM, then partly sunny conditions are forecast, with a high near 61°F. Friday night brings scattered showers and a low around 50°F.
Kenai: Fog/mist and 53°F early, with visibility at 2.5 miles. Scattered showers before 10 AM, then isolated showers after 1 PM. High 57°F, low 51°F.
Homer: Overcast and 53°F early. Scattered showers are possible before 10 AM, with a high near 58°F and a low around 51°F.
Seward: Light rain and 52°F early. Showers are likely mainly before 10 AM, with a high near 55°F and low around 49°F.
🌌 Aurora Check
The Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is calling for low aurora activity today. Its forecast shows Kp values reaching 4 around 4 PM, then falling to 2 by 7 PM and 10 PM. The institute says low-level displays could be visible from as far south as Anchorage if skies are clear.
And tonight is worth noting for another reason: UAF says August 21 marks the beginning of its recommended aurora-viewing season in Fairbanks, when darkness becomes sufficient for viewing again.
Unfortunately, Southcentral’s clouds are not exactly rolling out the red carpet.
💅 Memaw’s Parting Words
Happy National Senior Citizens Day from one seasoned road warrior to another. We seniors have earned the right to say what younger drivers don’t always want to hear: slow down, leave some room and quit thinking you can outsmart the weather, the traffic or a construction zone. 💅 We’ve seen enough weather, construction, bad decisions and spectacularly unnecessary roadside drama to know that getting there five minutes later is usually a much better deal than becoming today’s cautionary tale.
And remember, hon: Experience is just a fancy word for having already learned the hard way. 💅✨ Now, you know the drill. Drive alive from dawn to night and we’ll see you back here tomorrow. 💖
