Anchorage is in for a windy day Tuesday, and if your trash cans, patio furniture, or hanging flower baskets aren’t secured yet, now is the time.
A Wind Advisory is in effect from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday for the Anchorage Bowl and Hillside as strong southeast winds move into the area.
The first gusts are expected to develop across the Anchorage Hillside Monday night before expanding into the Anchorage Bowl around midday Tuesday. While breezy conditions are expected across much of Anchorage, the strongest winds are forecast to stay along the Hillside and the Seward Highway corridor between Potter Marsh and Bird Point.

That stretch of highway is especially prone to powerful crosswinds, making travel more challenging for high-profile vehicles such as RVs, campers, moving trucks, delivery vans, and vehicles towing trailers.
Even if you’re just running errands, expect a tougher grip on the steering wheel, especially on exposed roads, overpasses, and bridges. Loose outdoor items can quickly become airborne when winds pick up, so securing anything that could blow away before heading to bed Monday night could save you a headache Tuesday morning.
The good news is this won’t stick around for long. Winds are expected to gradually weaken Tuesday night, with calmer conditions returning on Wednesday.
If you have travel plans along the Seward Highway or a commute through Anchorage, it’s worth allowing a little extra time and staying alert for sudden gusts, especially near Potter Marsh and Bird Point. Sometimes it’s not the rain or snow that catches drivers off guard in Alaska. It’s the wind.
