Memaw’s Arctic Roll for Tuesday, June 16, 2026
☕️ Well, sugar, it’s National Fudge Day, and Southcentral’s highway crews apparently decided to celebrate with Fifty Shades of Orange Barrels. Between the Glenn’s bridge work, the Seward’s construction zone, and the Sterling’s flaggers and pilot cars, today’s commute comes with a few extra sprinkles of patience.
💅🍫🚧
The good news? The weather isn’t looking for trouble today. Most roads are in decent shape, visibility is generally good, and traffic is expected to stay fairly light outside the usual rush-hour crowd.
The real challenge is remembering that summer in Alaska comes with only two settings: road construction and preparing for road construction. None of today’s work zones are expected to be major trip-wreckers, but all three have the potential to turn a smooth drive into a slower one if you hit them at the wrong time.
If the clouds decide to cooperate tonight, Mother Nature may reward your patience with a little northern lights dessert after sunset.
🟢🟡🔴 Daily Verdict: Good Roads, Orange Barrels & a Side of Aurora
- Roads: Generally favorable conditions with active construction zones on the Glenn, Seward, and Sterling Highways.
- Traffic: Light overall, with moderate slowdowns possible through work areas.
- Sky: Partly cloudy tonight. Aurora possible if skies clear enough for viewing.

⚠️ Glenn Highway Watch
Peters Creek Bridge Deck Replacement
- Status: Major active construction zone
- Location: Glenn Highway at Peters Creek near Birchwood
- Traffic Control: All traffic routed onto southbound bridge via Road Zipper system
- Speed Limit: 45 MPH
- Lane Configuration: Narrow lanes with peak-direction priority flow
- Project Status: Northbound bridge deck replacement underway
- Expected Duration: Through at least mid-July
- Alternate Route: Old Glenn Highway through Chugiak and Peters Creek available
- Delay Risk: Moderate during peak commute windows
💅 Reality check: The Road Zipper isn’t magic. One minute traffic is humming along, the next everyone’s tapping their brakes because somebody forgot what a narrowed lane looks like. Stay centered, stay off your phone, and resist the urge to play race car driver through the squeeze.
🛻💨 Seward Highway

| Morning | 55 | 50 | Good travel conditions along most of the corridor. | 🟢 Low |
| Afternoon | 61 | 50 | Expect increased summer traffic near popular recreation areas. | 🟢 Low |
| Evening | 56 | 51 | Gusty winds possible near Turnagain Arm. | 🟡 Moderate |

- Traffic Control: Possible nighttime pilot cars and intermittent traffic control
- Speed Limit: 45 MPH
- Project: Turn lane construction and safety improvements
- Delay Risk: Low daytime, low-to-moderate nighttime
💅 Reality check: Daytime travelers will probably wonder what all the fuss is about. Night owls may get a different experience. If you see pilot cars ahead, settle in and enjoy the scenery. You’re not winning any trophies by rushing to the back bumper in front of you.

💅 Memaw’s Parting Words
National Fudge Day feels like the perfect holiday for Alaska drivers. Making good fudge and surviving summer construction both require the exact same skill: patience. Rush either one and you’re probably going to end up with a mess.
Today’s roads aren’t throwing any major punches. Mother Nature is staying quiet while the orange barrels run the show. Visibility is decent, and most folks should get where they’re headed without much drama. The biggest challenge isn’t rain, fog, snow, or ice. It’s orange barrels, reduced speed limits, flaggers, pilot cars, and that one driver who believes every construction zone is a personal insult.
Don’t be that driver.
The Glenn wants you to slow down through Peters Creek. The Seward wants you to watch for nighttime traffic control at McHugh Creek. The Sterling would appreciate it if you didn’t treat the flagger like they’re standing there for entertainment.
And since it’s National Fudge Day, Memaw has important questions:
- 🍫 Are you Team Walnuts or Team No Walnuts?
- 🍫 What’s your favorite fudge flavor?
- 🍫 Do you make homemade fudge?
- 🍫 Is there a legendary family recipe hiding in your kitchen drawer?

Fudge so smooth it could talk its way out of a speeding ticket and still get invited back for seconds. From chocolate classics to the “I-shouldn’t-but-I-will” flavors, this candy shoppe didn’t come to play, it came to ruin self-control in the best possible way.
Go on. Tell yourself “just one piece.” Memaw will wait right here while you lie to yourself. 😏

👉🏿 Drop your recipes, photos, and fudge wisdom in the comments. Somebody out there is guarding a century-old fudge recipe like it’s Fort Knox, and today seems like a good day to share it.
✨ Until tomorrow, keep the shiny side up, leave room between you and the brake lights. And, don’t forget to look up tonight if the clouds break. The best treat of National Fudge Day might not come from the candy shop. It might be glowing green over Alaska tonight. 🌌
Now, you know the drill. Drive alive from dawn to night, sugar. 💖🎶
