One rally. One protest. A town bracing for a very busy Tuesday.

President Donald Trump is visiting Wasilla today, Tuesday, October 13, to rally support for two Alaska Republicans running for reelection: U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan and U.S. Rep. Nick Begich. The visit is part of the national Republican effort to hold seats in Congress in the November midterm elections. Trump’s remarks are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at the Menard Memorial Sports Center.

The Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center sits on 60 acres in Wasilla, with 104,000 square feet of indoor sports and event space. The complex includes an NHL-size ice arena, the MTA Turf Arena, a walking track and a paved perimeter trail. The aerial view also shows the facility’s parking areas. But the rally is only part of today’s story. A separate demonstration is planned at Newcomb Park, police have announced road closures, and public safety officials warn of possible highway delays. Those changes could affect families, commuters, local businesses and anyone traveling through Wasilla.

Why Trump Is Coming to Alaska

Trump’s visit is a campaign stop intended to help Sullivan and Begich win reelection. Sullivan is seeking another term in the U.S. Senate, where Republicans are working to maintain their majority. Begich is seeking another term representing Alaska in the U.S. House.

U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan (R), left, and U.S. Rep. Nick Begich (R) are both seeking reelection in November. President Donald Trump’s Wasilla rally is part of a national Republican effort to help keep them in Congress.

Sullivan faces Democratic challenger Mary Peltola in the Senate race. The contest has drawn national attention because control of the Senate is at stake in November.

The rally follows Vice President JD Vance’s recent Alaska visit, which also included campaigning for Sullivan. Trump’s appearance brings the national campaign effort directly to the Mat-Su Valley.

Rally Schedule and Location

The official rally registration page lists the event at the Menard Memorial Sports Center, 1001 S. Clapp Street in Wasilla.

  • Noon: Doors open.
  • 2 p.m.: Program begins.
  • 3:30 p.m.: Trump’s remarks are scheduled to begin.

The event is promoted by the Trump 47 Committee. The registration page says the committee paid for the event and that it was not authorized by any candidate or candidate’s committee.

Republican gubernatorial candidates Bernadette Wilson, Dave Bronson and Treg Taylor have also confirmed plans to attend, according to Alaska’s News Source. The available announcements do not establish whether Trump will endorse any of the candidates running for governor.

Registered attendees should check the email address they used to obtain tickets for their individual parking and transportation instructions. Officials have warned that access to the venue will be restricted.

Road Closures: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Wasilla Police Department and Alaska State Troopers announced the following closures for Tuesday:

  • Clapp Street: Between Mack Drive and the Parks Highway.
  • Beacon Street: Entire street.
  • Aviation Avenue: Entire street.

There will be no pedestrian access to the Menard Center or along the closed roads during the closure period.

Public safety officials also warn that motorists could experience delays of up to 30 minutes on the Glenn and Parks highways between Anchorage and Wasilla. That is a warning about potential delays, not a guarantee that every driver will face a 30-minute wait.

A Separate Protest at Newcomb Park

Stand UP Alaska is promoting a protest at Newcomb Park beside Wasilla Lake from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, October 13, in response to President Donald Trump’s visit to Wasilla. Organizers say the demonstration will include live music and complimentary snacks and hot drinks. Parking is limited. Flyer courtesy of Stand UP Alaska.

Stand UP Alaska and Mat-Su United for Progress have announced a demonstration at Newcomb Park, 891 E. Parks Highway, on the shore of Wasilla Lake.

The event is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Organizers say they intend to demonstrate opposition to Trump’s agenda and make their voices heard during his visit.

The announcement promotes live music by Black Water Railroad Company. Organizers also say complimentary snacks and hot drinks will be available. They describe the event as peaceful and nonviolent and ask participants not to bring weapons.

Parking at Newcomb Park is limited, according to the organizers. They suggest that attendees consider nearby parking options and check event instructions before leaving.

The protest overlaps with the rally’s afternoon program. Drivers should plan for the possibility of additional congestion near the Parks Highway and Wasilla Lake, but no additional road closures around the protest have been confirmed in the announcements cited here.

What Parents and Commuters Need to Know

Schools: The Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District is keeping schools open, according to local reporting. Parents should check district communications and their transportation providers for any specific bus-route or pickup changes. The available information does not establish that school buses will be delayed or rerouted.

Work and appointments: Anyone traveling through Wasilla should allow extra time, particularly during the afternoon. If your destination is near the Menard Center or Newcomb Park, check the route before leaving and consider whether the trip can be rescheduled.

Rally attendees: Do not assume you can walk to the Menard Center or park at the venue. Follow the instructions sent to your registered email address.

Protest attendees: Check the organizers’ latest information about parking and access to Newcomb Park. Keep clear of roadways and follow any directions from law enforcement.

Airport and airspace: Local reporting says Wasilla Municipal Airport will be closed from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Temporary flight restrictions will also apply in the Anchorage and greater Wasilla areas, including restrictions affecting drones. Pilots and drone operators should check the applicable FAA Temporary Flight Restrictions before flying.

Where to Check for Updates

Today’s rally and protest bring political activity and added security to Wasilla, alongside restrictions that may affect everyday travel. The best plan is to check current conditions, allow extra time and confirm school, parking and transportation information directly with the organizations responsible.
