Memaw’s Arctic Roll: Rain’s Moving In, So Don’t Let Summer Fool You 💅
Memaw’s Arctic Roll for Saturday, August 15, 2026
☕️ Good morning, hon. Southcentral starts with relatively gentle conditions, but the weekend pattern is turning wetter: scattered showers today, then increasingly widespread rain overnight as low pressure moves in.
🏠 And, happy National Homesteaders Day! whether you’re tending a Mat-Su garden, putting up berries, mending something instead of replacing it, or baking from scratch, practical know-how is very Alaska. 🌿
🟡 Daily Verdict: Mostly easy daytime driving; fog near Kenai, wet pavement tonight, and active work zones demand attention.

🛻💨 Parks Highway

| Time of Day | Hi Temperatures (°F) | Lo Temperatures (°F) | Driving Tips | Road Risk Level |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Morning | 58 | 55 | Damp roads possible; watch for isolated showers and low cloud | 🟡 Moderate |
| Afternoon | 70 | 62 | Partly sunny with only isolated shower potential; stay alert for changing pavement | 🟢 Low |
| Evening | 62 | 55 | Showers become more likely late; slow down on wet curves and ramps | 🟡 Moderate |
| Sunrise & Sunset | Sunrise: 6:05 AM | Sunset: 9:57 PM | Long daylight, but low-angle sun can still glare through wet windshields | 🟢 Low |
| Aurora Forecast for Tonight | K2 – K3 | Cloudy overnight; viewing odds are poor | Check the live SWPC aurora map before heading out | 🟡 Moderate |
🚜💨 Glenn Highway

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Morning | 58 | 55 | Overcast conditions around Wasilla; use lights and leave room | 🟡 Moderate |

🚧 Roadwork / Maintenance — Glenn Highway Bridge Deck Preservation
The northbound bridge is open. Expect intermittent southbound lane closures while the crossover detour is removed: Monday–Friday, 11 AM to 4:30 AM, and 11 AM Friday to 4:30 AM Sunday. A 45 mph speed reduction is in effect. DOT&PF lists Hamilton Construction as the contractor; project information is available at glennbridges.com.
💅 Reality check: That 45 mph zone is not a suggestion, sugar. Build in time and do not brake late for a suddenly stacking work zone.
🚜💨 Seward Highway

| Time of Day | Hi Temperatures (°F) | Lo Temperatures (°F) | Driving Tips | Road Risk Level |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Morning | 58 | 52 | Mostly cloudy; rain chance early, with damp road surfaces possible | 🟡 Moderate |
| Afternoon | 62 | 56 | Scattered showers and south wind around 10 mph; watch exposed stretches | 🟡 Moderate |
| Evening | 56 | 52 | Rain develops after 10 PM, with south winds 10–15 mph | 🟠 Elevated |
| Sunrise & Sunset | Sunrise: 6:07 AM | Sunset: 9:53 PM | Girdwood loses daylight a few minutes earlier than Anchorage | 🟡 Moderate |
| Aurora Forecast for Tonight | K2 – K3 | Rain and clouds are expected tonight | Save the aurora chase for a clearer night | 🟠 Elevated |
🚧 Seward Highway: McHugh Creek, MP 111.5–112
Crews are working along the road. Nightly pilot-car operations are scheduled from 8 PM to 5 AM, with a 45 mph speed reduction in the MP 111–112 area.
🚧 Seward Highway: MP 90–99 pavement preservation
Construction is active. Expect delays, nightly lane closures, flagging, and/or pilot cars throughout the work zone. Construction activity also affects the adjacent shared-use path.
🚧 Seward Highway: MP 69–75 maintenance
Expect short delays, flagging, and lane-closure operations Monday through Friday, 6:30 AM–6 PM, through October 2.
💅 Reality check: Seward Highway has rain coming and multiple work zones already on the books. Leave early, stay patient, and do not try to “make up time” through flagging.
🚜💨 Sterling Highway

| Time of Day | Hi Temperatures (°F) | Lo Temperatures (°F) | Driving Tips | Road Risk Level |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Morning | 55 | 52 | Fog/mist near Kenai cut visibility to 0.75 mile early; use low beams and increase following distance | 🟠 Elevated |
| Afternoon | 61 | 56 | Cloudy, with isolated showers possible later in the day | 🟡 Moderate |
| Evening | 56 | 52 | Rain increasingly likely after 1 AM; pavement will turn slick | 🟠 Elevated |
| Sunrise & Sunset | Sunrise: 6:23 AM | Sunset: 9:56 PM | Homer starts later than the Anchorage-area corridors | 🟡 Moderate |
| Aurora Forecast for Tonight | K2 – K3 | Cloudy with rain likely overnight | Cloud cover makes a Peninsula aurora look unlikely | 🟠 Elevated |
🚧 Sterling Highway: MP 45–47
Watch for blasting Monday–Friday and construction crews Monday–Saturday, 6 AM–7 PM. Flagging is possible during blasts, with 5–10 minute delays. Watch for construction equipment entering and exiting the roadway.
💅 Reality check: If the flagger stops you, you stop. Blasting schedules do not negotiate with your grocery run.

| Sunrise & Sunset | Sunrise: 6:05 AM | Sunset: 9:57 PM | Use the long daylight, but keep sunglasses handy for glare | 🟢 Low |
| Aurora Forecast for Tonight | K2 – K3 | Cloudy overnight with showers possible | Aurora visibility hinges on a break in the clouds | 🟡 Moderate |
💖💅 Memaw’s Parting Words:
The daylight is still generous, the rain is not here in full force yet, and that means you have every opportunity to make good decisions before the sky gets moody. Drive like the road has bills to pay and no patience for foolishness. 💅✨
That being said, you know the drill, hon. Drive alive from dawn to night. 💖
Forecasts: NOAA, National Weather Service and Alaska 511. Aurora information: Geophysical Institute, University of Alaska Fairbanks. Sunrise and sunset: Timeanddate. Reality checks: Memaw. All conditions are subject to change without notice. 💅✨
