Weather and Harbor Conditions Keep Anglers Waiting

HOMER, Alaska — The 32nd annual Homer Winter King Salmon Tournament will no longer take place today. Organizers have postponed the event to Saturday, April 4, 2026, because of ongoing cold, thick harbor ice, and challenging marine conditions in Kachemak Bay. This marks only the second time in the tournament’s history that a two‑week delay has been needed, with the first occurring during the inaugural event in 1994.

Weather and harbor conditions remain difficult. Daytime highs are expected in the upper 20s to low 30s, with overnight lows in the teens. Snow showers are possible through the weekend, and north to northeast winds will continue to sweep across Homer and Kachemak Bay. On the water, winds of 10 to 15 knots and 2‑ to 3‑foot seas, along with freezing spray, make boating and tournament operations unsafe.

The tournament has a proud history of big fish. The largest winter king salmon ever weighed at the event was a 41.82‑pounder caught by Homer local Phil Christensen in 2002, a record that still stands. Since 2021, the tournament has averaged over $200,000 in cash prizes, with recent champions taking home more than $75,000 in total winnings, including side competitions.

Remember: No lines in the water before 9AM and all rods must be out by 4PM. Stay within tournament rules to keep your catch valid. 📸: Homer Winter King Salmon Tournament.

Fishers should also review the tournament rules before April 4. Everyone must follow ADF&G regulations, including purchasing a fishing license and king salmon stamp before fishing. Only one rod per fisher is allowed, lines may not be in the water before 9AM, and all lines must be out by 4PM. Only one fish per person can be weighed, and fishers must be in line at the weigh‑in by 6PM. Any violations of state fishing rules should be reported to State Wildlife Troopers, and tournament-specific violations to Tournament Headquarters. Full rules are available at HomerWinterKing.com.

Registered participants who cannot fish on April 4 should contact wkt@homeralaska.org with their name, team, and best contact information. For updates and weather forecasts, check the tournament’s Facebook and Instagram pages or contact the Homer Chamber of Commerce at 907‑235‑7740.
