Sparkling Skies, Sneaky Ice, and a Sky Show That Might Keep You Up Past Bedtime

By Gina Hill | Alaska Headline Living | March 19, 2026

💅 Well now, sweetheart, Southcentral woke up with a fresh little sugar sprinkle overnight. Not a big storm, mind you, but just enough snow to dust the yards, kiss the guardrails, and remind drivers that Old Man Winter hasn’t packed his duffel bag yet.

❄ The main roads are mostly traveled in, but that light overnight snow can hide slick patches where tires polished things smooth before sunrise. So the highways may look innocent this morning, but they’re still feeling a little slippery in places. Take it slow on those curves, give the car ahead of you some breathing room, and remember: in Alaska, even a tiny overnight snow can turn a commute into a skating lesson if you rush it.

🌌 Tonight? The sun’s been tossing a little cosmic drama our way. Space weather folks say geomagnetic activity could spark auroras again across northern skies thanks to recent solar eruptions.

Sterling Hwy & Main St | Alaska 511 | Anglers hoping to chase the big one will have to wait one more week. The Homer Winter King Salmon Tournament has been postponed to Saturday, March 28, 2026, after tournament officials determined that heavy ice buildup at the harbor entrance, icy conditions at the boat launch, and ice accumulating in many mooring slips created unsafe launching and navigation conditions in Homer Harbor. The tournament committee announced the delay after a March 13 evaluation and said safety for participating anglers remains the top priority. Registered anglers who cannot attend the new date should email wkt@homeralaska.org with their name, team name, and contact information. ☕ Memaw’s Parting Words

💅 Alright darling, here’s the deal.

Last night’s snow wasn’t the kind that shuts down the world. It’s the kind that quietly freshens everything up while you were sleeping and then waits to see who forgot how to drive on it.

So keep your speed polite and drive pretty. Pretty patient. The mountains are looking gorgeous today, the sky might put on a northern lights show tonight, and there’s no reason to rush past all that beauty just to hurry up and meet a snowbank.

Drive alive from dawn to night, wave at your neighbors, and remember: Memaw’s rooting for you to make it there and back with both bumpers intact. 💖

Memaw’s road rule for Alaska drivers: Drive alive from dawn to night. ❄️🚗 A little rhythm for the road and a reminder that safe travels never go out of style.
