The music world is mourning the loss of Neil Sedaka, the legendary singer-songwriter whose melodies helped define generations of pop music. He was 86.
Sedaka’s family announced his sudden passing Friday, describing him as “a true rock and roll legend” and, above all, “an incredible human being who will be deeply missed.” Reports indicate he was taken to a hospital in Los Angeles following a medical emergency. An official cause of death has not been released.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, and trained at the Juilliard School, Sedaka rose to fame in the late 1950s and early 1960s as one of the brightest stars of early rock and pop. A gifted pianist and songwriter, he became a central figure in the Brill Building era, crafting polished, emotionally resonant songs that climbed the charts around the world.

A Catalog of Timeless Hits
Among his most beloved songs:
- “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do”
- “Calendar Girl”
- “Oh! Carol”
- “Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen”
- “Little Devil”
- “Next Door to an Angel”
- “Laughter in the Rain”
- “Bad Blood”
His songwriting extended far beyond his own recordings. Sedaka co-wrote “Love Will Keep Us Together,” later made famous by Captain & Tennille, and penned hits recorded by artists across generations.
Mickey Dolenz Remembers a Friend
Tributes quickly poured in from fellow musicians, including Micky Dolenz of The Monkees.
In an Instagram post, a screenshot of which is included below, Dolenz reflected on Sedaka’s songwriting talent and personal kindness.

Dolenz noted that Monkees fans would recognize Sedaka’s contributions to their world. Sedaka co-wrote “When Love Comes Knocking at Your Door” with Carole Bayer Sager and wrote “Rainy Jane” for Davy Jones’ solo record.
He also shared a personal memory, recalling how Sedaka traveled from the East Coast to Los Angeles to perform “Love Comes Knocking at Your Door” at Jones’ memorial service.
“Sending my thoughts to his family, friends, and everyone who loved his music,” Dolenz concluded.
A Lasting Legacy
Over the course of his decades-long career, Sedaka earned Grammy nominations, was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Yet beyond the accolades, friends and collaborators consistently described him as gracious, generous, and deeply devoted to his craft.
He is survived by his wife, Leba, whom he married in 1962, and their two children.
For millions, Neil Sedaka’s songs were more than chart-toppers. They were the soundtrack to first loves, teenage heartbreaks, weddings, and long drives with the radio turned up. His music lives on, carried forward by generations who continue to sing along.
