MATANUSKA-SUSITNA VALLEY: WIND EVENT CAUSING ACTIVE POWER OUTAGES

Strong northeast winds continue to impact the Matanuska-Susitna Valley overnight and into Sunday, and power outages are now being reported across the region, according to the Matanuska Electric Association.

As of approximately 4:30 AM Sunday, MEA reports more than 400 members without power, with the most significant impacts in the Petersville area, where nearly all served members are affected. Smaller outages are also reported in the Denali Princess and Talkeetna areas. Crews have been assigned and are responding as conditions allow.

The National Weather Service warns that strong northeast winds and gusts remain the primary hazard, with gusts capable of downing trees, stressing power lines, and causing additional outages, especially in exposed areas of the Mat-Su Valley.

WEATHER CONDITIONS DRIVING THE OUTAGES

Northeast winds continue at 25 to 35 mph with higher gusts, producing blowing and drifting snow and dangerous wind chills. Even light snowfall combined with strong winds is enough to create whiteout conditions in open areas and increase strain on infrastructure. These conditions are expected to persist through Sunday and gradually ease Monday.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR RESIDENTS

Additional power outages are possible while winds remain strong. Residents should be prepared for extended outages, limited visibility during travel, and rapidly changing conditions overnight and through Sunday.

Secure loose outdoor items immediately.
Avoid unnecessary travel, especially in open and wind-prone areas.
Charge devices and prepare backup heat and lighting if safe to do so.
Monitor official updates from the National Weather Service and Matanuska Electric Association.

This remains a serious wind-driven event for the Mat-Su, not a routine winter night. Conditions may worsen before they improve.
