Roads, Ruts, and Radar: Memaw’s Morning Road Wisdom

Morning slowdown on the Glenn at MP 34.5. Alaska 511 shows a line of brake lights as commuters hit the early bottleneck.

(Because some of us need a reminder that four-wheel drive is not a personality.)

Good morning, sugar. Memaw checked the roads, the weather, the Troopers, and that 511 map with all those little blinking icons. Here’s what you’re walking into today, so grab your travel mug and pay attention.

PARKS HIGHWAY

🚗 Memaw’s verdict: Behave. Be safe. Especially you Wasilla commuters.

Parks Highway @ Church St. and S. Mack Dr/Alaska 511

No big AK511 panic buttons flashing this morning, but don’t let that fool you. Parks drivers have been acting up lately, Troopers have logged enough recent crashes to make your insurance agent sweat.

Expect slowdowns around Wasilla and anything near Trunk Road. If someone gets froggy and rolls their truck, the whole highway can back up faster than gossip at a church potluck.

💅 Memaw tip: Leave early and pretend you like your coworkers enough to show up on time. And, for heaven’s sake, quit tailgating in the dark.

GLENN HIGHWAY

Memaw’s verdict: Bless it, the Glenn woke up cranky, like usual..

Glenn Highway @ MP 34.5/Alaska 511

Anchorage PD has already had their hands full this week on the Glenn, especially around Peters Creek and Eagle River, where folks insist the laws of physics don’t apply to them.

If there’s even one fender-bender, the whole commute turns into a parking lot with better scenery. Watch those merging lanes; they get testy.

🛑 Memaw tip: If the cars in front of you are stopping, guess what? You are, too. Ease up on that gas pedal.

SEWARD HIGHWAY

Memaw’s verdict: Pretty today … but she’s a moody one.

Seward Highway @ Potter Marsh MP 117.3/Alaska 511

No major alerts right now, but the Seward loves to surprise people with sudden gusts, surprise slick spots, and the occasional “Avalanche Season Special.” Memaw calls this highway the “keep your boots laced” road.

If DOT is out plowing or knocking snow off the mountainsides, you’ll be sitting a spell.

Memaw tip: Keep both hands on the wheel. This is not the morning to be digging through your bag for a breakfast burrito.

STERLING HIGHWAY

Memaw’s verdict: Behaves until she doesn’t.

Sterling Highway @ Tern Lake MP 37/Alaska 511

Same story as Seward: no flashing alerts, but that doesn’t mean she’s in a good mood. Down on the Peninsula, conditions can change faster than your cousin switching relationship statuses on Facebook.

Expect drifting snow, patchy ice, and DOT crews doing their best impression of NASCAR pit crews.

🧣Memaw tip: Pack your winter gear. If you break down out there in Cooper Landing, even the moose will be looking at you like, “Girl … why?”

Memaw’s Parting Words

Sugar, if you take one thing from Memaw today, let it be this:

“Slow down. Stay in your lane. And don’t make the Troopers regret their career choices.”
