TUCSON, Arizona – Pima County law enforcement is now investigating the disappearance of 84‑year‑old Nancy Guthrie, mother of Today show co‑anchor Savannah Guthrie, as a potential crime and is urgently asking the public to assist with information that could lead to her safe return.

At a press briefing on Monday, February 2, 2026, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed officials have officially classified the disappearance as a criminal investigation, saying evidence found inside Nancy Guthrie’s Catalina Foothills home indicates she did not leave under her own power. Detectives from the homicide division have joined the case.Â
“Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and requires daily medication,” the sheriff told reporters. “We believe now, after processing what we saw at the home, that this is a crime scene and we urgently need the community’s help.” He declined to specify what investigators found but said the circumstances were concerning enough to elevate the investigation beyond a routine missing‑person search.Â
Public Assistance Requested

Authorities are urging anyone who lives in or near the neighborhood around East Skyline Drive and North Campbell Avenue where Guthrie was last seen, or anyone with home security footage from the area over the weekend, to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at (520) 351‑4900.Â
“We do not see this as much a search mission as we do a crime scene,” Sheriff Nanos said, appealing for tips or sightings that could help locate her.
Last Known Whereabouts and Search Efforts
Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her Tucson‑area residence late on Saturday, January 31, and was reported missing by family around noon on Sunday, February 1 after she failed to show up for a planned event and did not respond to contact attempts.Â
Search and rescue teams, including ground crews and drones, initially canvassed the area, and law enforcement also made use of search dogs and other resources before shifting focus toward criminal investigation efforts given the emerging evidence.
Family Statement
Savannah Guthrie did not appear on Today on Monday as the news of her mother’s disappearance and the evolving investigation took center stage. In a statement read by colleagues, she thanked the public for their “thoughts, prayers, and messages of support” and said the family’s focus remains on the safe return of her dear mom. She, too, encouraged anyone with information to reach out to authorities.Â
At this time, Guthrie’s whereabouts remain unknown and the investigation is ongoing. Law enforcement reiterated that any detail, no matter how small, could be crucial in determining what happened to the 84‑year‑old.Â
