💅 Fog, Flaggers & a Little Foreshadowing

Memaw’s Arctic Roll for Thursday, October 8, 2026

💅 Good morning, road warriors! Memaw is rolling into Thursday with a new reason to pay attention before you pull out of the driveway.

The Glenn Highway has a temporary work zone this morning, with the left lane closed because of guardrail damage. Alaska 511 updated the alert at 6:19 a.m. today.

And today is William Egan Day, honoring Alaska’s three-time governor and one of the people who helped shape our young state. Egan served as governor from 1959 to 1966 and again from 1970 to 1974, making him the only person to serve three terms as Alaska’s governor.

William A. Egan | 1973

Governor William A. Egan signs Alaska’s Limited Entry bill into law in 1973, creating a system to limit the number of fishermen participating in certain commercial fisheries. The goal was to address growing fishing pressure on declining salmon runs while helping protect the economic stability of fishermen. The policy would go on to shape Alaska’s commercial fishing industry for decades, with both supporters and critics pointing to lasting effects.

So we’ll take a little Alaska history along for the ride while Memaw checks the morning fog, showers, construction zones and roads. Then we’ll look ahead to tonight, because that Kp 6 aurora forecast could give Thursday one heck of a finale if the skies clear.

Grab your coffee, sugar, check those headlights and let Memaw give you the 411 on the 511. 💅🚗💨

🟢🟡🔴 Daily Verdict: Foggy Start, Construction Caution, Aurora After Dark

Roads: Mostly manageable, but morning fog can cut visibility. Active work zones remain the big travel-time wrinkle.

Traffic: Expect delays where flaggers and pilot cars are working, especially on the Seward and Sterling highways.

Sky: Patchy fog early, then partly sunny for much of Southcentral. Tonight turns partly cloudy to mostly clear in some areas.

Headlights: Yes. Morning fog and the darker evening commute make this a headlights-on kind of day.

🌌 Tonight’s Sky: Memaw Says Look Up

The aurora forecast starts quietly and gets considerably more interesting.

UAF’s forecast calls for high aurora activity from 1–4 a.m., with displays potentially visible overhead across much of Alaska if skies are clear.

The moon is a waning crescent, so moonlight shouldn’t be the star of the show.

The clouds, however, may try to steal the spotlight.

💅 Memaw’s Parting Words

Here’s one I like for William Egan Day: he was remembered for having an “amazing ability to never forget anyone’s name.”

That’s something worth carrying with you today.

Beaded Sky Curtain | William A. Egan Civic & Convention Center, Anchorage

Look closely and you’re looking at 5 million glass beads, hand-strung to create the shimmering impression of the Aurora Borealis. Artist Jeanne Leffingwell created the 1985 installation, with the beads arranged into 2,300 color-coded strands of varying lengths and suspended from 24 steel rods. The strands stretch about 6½ miles in total, yet the finished curtain weighs 320 pounds. The makers even back-stitched every three inches around anchoring beads to distribute the weight evenly.

The work took 10 months to string by hand. Published accounts identify Leffingwell and her assistants as the people who brought this extraordinary piece together, but I could not find a trustworthy source naming the individual assistants.

Alaska can be a big place, but the people in it matter. So remember somebody’s name. Give somebody a little grace in traffic. Let somebody merge without making them audition for it.

And when the workday is finally behind you, look up.

If those clouds cooperate, tonight’s sky may be worth remembering, too.

💅 Roll safe, remember your people and keep your eyes on the road until you get where you’re going.

Forecasts from NOAA, the National Weather Service, and Alaska 511. Reality checks from Memaw. Both are subject to change without notice.
