Memaw’s Arctic Roll: Rain, Roadwork and the Kindness Lane 💅
Memaw’s Arctic Roll for Monday, October 5, 2026

Good Monday Morning, sugar! 💅🚙
Today is National Do Something Nice Today, and Memaw has a perfectly practical suggestion: start with the driver next to you.
Someone signals that they need to merge? Let them in. Someone is leaving extra room because the pavement is wet? Don’t squeeze into it. Someone is driving cautiously through a work zone? Give them the space they need.
A wave costs nothing. A little patience costs almost nothing. And defensive driving can save a life.
Southcentral is waking up to rain, drizzle and cloudy skies, with temperatures comfortably above freezing across the main commute corridors. The big exception to the usual Monday shuffle is the Seward Highway between MP 90 and MP 99, where pavement-preservation work means flaggers, pilot cars, possible delays and nightly lane closures.
So buckle up, hon. Leave yourself some time and remember: getting there safely beats getting there first.
🟢🟡🔴 Daily Verdict: Rainy Roads, Roadwork and a Little Kindness
- Roads: Wet across much of Southcentral this morning, with rain and showers expected. Temperatures remain above freezing on the main corridors.
- Traffic: Seward Highway MP 90–99 has active pavement-preservation work, including flagging and/or pilot-car operations, delays and nightly lane closures. The speed limit is reduced to 55 MPH through the work zone.
- Sky: Cloudy and showery tonight. UAF is forecasting moderate aurora activity, but clouds could keep the northern lights under wraps.

🚜✨ Seward Highway

The Seward Highway has two things to watch today: wet weather and an active pavement-preservation project.
Alaska 511 reports Seward Highway MP 90–99 is under roadwork, with flagging and/or pilot-car operations, delays and nightly lane closures throughout the work zone. The speed limit has been reduced to 55 MPH.
Construction crews are also working along the adjacent shared-use pathway while performing digout and repaving work. A shuttle will be provided when the pathway is deemed unsafe to use during construction.
⚠️ Seward Highway MP 90–99: Pavement Preservation
Status: Roadwork / Maintenance
Expect: Flagging operations, pilot cars and delays.
Nighttime: Lane closures throughout the work zone.
Speed limit: 55 MPH.
Pathway: Construction equipment and personnel will be working along the adjacent shared-use pathway. Shuttle service will be provided when the pathway is unsafe to traverse during construction.
Contractor: Granite Construction Company

💅 Reality check: If MP 90–99 is part of your commute, build in extra time. The 55 MPH work-zone speed limit isn’t a suggestion, and the flaggers and pilot cars are there for a reason.
| Time of Day | Hi Temperatures (°F) | Lo Temperatures | Driving Tips | Road Risk Level |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Morning | 49 | 41 | Wet pavement plus active roadwork. Watch closely for flaggers, pilot cars and changing traffic patterns. | 🟡 Moderate |
| Afternoon | 49 | 41 | Expect wet roads and possible work-zone delays. Obey the reduced 55 MPH speed limit through MP 90–99. | 🟠 Elevated |
| Evening | 43 | 41 | Nightly lane closures are possible. Slow down, follow work-zone signs and expect delays. | 🟠 Elevated |
Sunrise & Sunset: Seward — 8:13 a.m. / 7:17 p.m.
Aurora Forecast for Tonight: Kp 3, with moderate activity forecast. Clouds and showers could keep the show hidden.

💅 Memaw’s Parting Words
Today, Memaw wants you to make someone’s commute a little nicer. 💖
Let that car merge.
Wave when somebody lets you merge.
Give the cautious driver some room.
Slow down when you enter a work zone and please don’t turn a wet Monday morning into the Alaska Grand Prix. 🏎️ 🏁
Courteous driving isn’t just nice. It’s defensive driving, and defensive driving saves lives.
So take a breath, leave a little room, and remember that everybody on the road is trying to get somewhere, too.
Be the driver who makes somebody else’s morning better instead of harder. That’s a pretty nice thing to do. 💅🚙💨
