Good morning, buttercup. ☕💅 Memaw has the coffee, the commute and a little history lesson for your Friday.

Today is National Navajo Code Talkers Day, a day to honor the Native American service members whose languages helped protect Allied communications during World War II. The original 29 Navajo Code Talkers helped create the foundation of the legendary code, and their service remained classified for decades before they were finally recognized with Congressional Gold Medals in 1968.

So while Memaw is busy decoding today’s fog, showers, construction zones and highway shenanigans, she’s taking a moment to remember the men who literally helped keep America talking when it mattered most. More on these brave soldiers below. 🇺🇸

And today’s Alaska skies have their own little coded message. Aurora activity is currently quiet to unsettled at Kp 1–2, but geomagnetic activity is expected to increase around August 14 as a coronal-hole high-speed solar-wind stream arrives. 🌌

Now, let’s decode the roads. The Mat-Su gets sunshine with a chance of afternoon showers, Anchorage gets mostly sunny after some early fog, and the construction cones remain committed to their full-time employment.

The Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks puts current activity at Kp 1–2, or quiet to unsettled conditions. Activity is expected to increase around August 14 as a coronal-hole high-speed solar-wind stream arrives.

The best viewing window is roughly 11 PM to 2 AM, provided skies are dark and clear.

For Southcentral Alaska, clouds remain the wildcard. Anchorage and the Mat-Su are forecast to become partly cloudy tonight, so increased geomagnetic activity does not guarantee a visible show.

Aurora verdict: 🟡 Worth a peek, not worth losing sleep over. 🌌
