🚗✈️ Arctic Thunder Returns to JBER, Bringing Big Crowds and Traffic Delays

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The skies over Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson are about to get loud, while the roads around the base could get crowded.
JBER’s Arctic Thunder Open House returns Aug. 8 and 9, celebrating America’s 250th anniversary with two days of aerial demonstrations, military displays and activities for the public.
The event is free, including general admission and parking.
Gates open at 9 a.m., with the event running from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
Featured performers include the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Army Golden Knights, along with military and civilian aerial demonstrations, static displays and equipment from across the Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security.
JBER officials say previous Arctic Thunder events have drawn attendance of up to 250,000 people.
🚨 Expect Traffic Delays
The Anchorage Police Department is warning drivers to expect heavy traffic and delays because of the open house.
APD is asking motorists to be mindful of intersections and to allow extra time when traveling near JBER.
JBER has designated two primary entrances for the event:
- Gate 1: Boniface Parkway for attendees arriving from Anchorage and areas south of JBER.
- Gate 2: Fort Richardson via the D Street exit for those arriving from Eagle River and the Valley.
Drivers will be directed to free general parking after entering the base.
Morning Traffic Plan
From 9 a.m. to noon, the Boniface Gate will operate with three inbound lanes and one outbound lane to accommodate the expected surge of arriving visitors.
After noon, JBER says no open house traffic will be allowed through either the Boniface or Richardson gates.
That means visitors should plan their arrival accordingly and avoid waiting until later in the day to enter through those gates.
🚌 Other Ways to Get There
Visitors can also use public transportation. Attendees can travel to the Northway Mall bus stop and take local bus service directly to the Arctic Thunder grounds.
A bike valet will also be available, with marked bicycle routes leading to the event.
✈️ What to Expect
The open house will feature dozens of static displays spread across approximately 30 acres, along with aerial demonstrations and opportunities for visitors to get an up-close look at military aircraft, equipment and personnel.
Photography and video are permitted, including cameras with large lenses. However, large camera bags are not allowed. Bags and backpacks must be smaller than 22 inches by 16 inches by 10 inches, unless the equipment is carried on your person.
Families with children can pick up identification wristbands at entry control points or in Hangar 2. Accessible parking is available for vehicles displaying the appropriate identification and markings.
JBER notes that event information is subject to change and encourages visitors to check for updates before heading out.
Bottom line for drivers: If you’re traveling anywhere near JBER this weekend, expect heavier-than-normal traffic, especially during the morning arrival period. Give yourself extra time, watch the intersections and be patient.
Arctic Thunder is free. The traffic? Not so much. 😎✈️🚗
