Amid one of the deepest budget shortfalls in recent memory, the Anchorage School District has made a decision that matters to families and student-athletes across the city. Wrestling programs will continue into the 2026‑27 school year.
Facing an estimated $90 million deficit, district leaders initially proposed sweeping cuts that could have affected extracurricular activities and athletics. Parents, coaches, and students worried that opportunities outside the classroom might disappear along with them.
In February, the Anchorage School Board approved a budget that preserves middle school sports and many high school athletics programs, including wrestling. Board members redirected savings from school closures to keep those programs in place, recognizing the role sports play in student development and school engagement.
Hundreds of Anchorage parents, students, and community members filled the school board chambers on Feb. 24, 2026, showing that their voices and presence can make a real difference as members voted on next year’s budget.

Zachary Thompson, a dedicated wrestler at Wendler Middle School, feels the impact of that decision personally. His season has been packed with intense practices, hard-fought matches, and focused preparation that builds both skill and confidence. Along the way, he has celebrated victories, learned new techniques, and grown stronger with each challenge on the mat, showing the rewards of dedication and persistence. These qualities of discipline, resilience, and teamwork shape him as a wrestler and help him contribute positively to his school, peers, and the wider Anchorage community.

Surrounded by the support of his family, Zachary steps onto the mat ready to focus on the match ahead. His preparation is as much mental as it is physical, a mindset he shares in his own words during an interview with Alaska Headline Living.
Wrestling challenges Zachary and his teammates to stay disciplined, think strategically, and push through tough moments. Success on the mat comes from focus, practice, and determination, lessons that extend beyond competition into school, friendships, and everyday life.
Wrestling also stands out as one of the most affordable and accessible sports in the Anchorage School District. Compared with programs like football, hockey, or gymnastics that require extensive equipment and higher operating costs, wrestling allows schools to field competitive teams with modest resources. That affordability has kept participation strong across Anchorage schools and ensures students from many backgrounds can compete.

Statewide competitions organized through the Alaska School Activities Association give students the chance to test themselves against athletes from across the state. The mat offers young wrestlers like Zachary the opportunity to refine skills, measure progress, and celebrate achievements with teammates.

Anchorage’s choice to keep wrestling programs strong shows the difference community support can make. With discipline, focus, and teamwork, kids like Zachary grow on the mat, in school, and at home, proving that the lessons learned in wrestling carry through every part of life.
