🛣️ Conditions Overview

  • Road surfaces region-wide are flagged for winter mode: snow-packed, icy patches and blowing/drifting snow are all in play. Bridges, overpasses and higher-elevation ramps freeze first.
  • Maintenance crews are working across all South-Central districts, but the volume and severity of conditions mean delays and hazards remain.
  • With darkness already setting in, reduced visibility combines with slick surfaces — this is not standard commuting conditions.

⚠️ Key Alerts & Closures

  • On the Glenn Highway: multi-vehicle incidents have forced full lane closures in both directions between Anchorage and Mat-Su during this storm. https://www.alaskasnewssource.com+1
  • On the Parks Highway/Glenn Highway corridor: A community alert states that the Parks and Glenn Highways are closed from Trunk Road to the Palmer Alternate. https://www.alaskasnewssource.com
  • The 511 Alaska event and condition lists show weather/road alerts, though many are general “winter road condition” status. Alaska 511+2Alaska 511+2

✅ Tonight’s Travel Recommendations

  • Delay if you can. Unless your trip is absolutely necessary, tonight is a strong “stay home or wait until morning” scenario.
  • If you must travel:
    • Leave extra time. Expect slower speeds, standing traffic and detours.
    • Reduce speed significantly from posted limits; icy roads + dark = double risk.
    • Increase following distance; anticipate other drivers losing control or braking unexpectedly.
    • Clear snow and ice from your vehicle before departure; keep headlights on.
    • Monitor 511 Alaska for live closures. If your route is listed as “Difficult” or “Impassable”, turn around.
  • Alternative planning: If possible, route away from major corridors that are heavily impacted (Glenn, Parks). Secondary roads may still be questionable, so only travel if you’re confident in your vehicle’s capability and your skills.
