🚗 Commute & Road Considerations

  • Frostbite risk is real. With actual temps in single digits and the “feels like” in the minus-teens or worse, dress in layers and cover any exposed skin.
  • Road surfaces may be slick or icy, especially in shaded areas or bridges/overpasses. Cold temps overnight freeze residual moisture.

  • Visibility may be reduced in early morning due to freezing fog or residual moisture in the air. Check for any fog/ice advisories before you head out.
  • Allocate extra time. Major routes such as the Glenn Highway, Parks Highway, Seward Highway, Sterling Highway, and Richardson Highway are all susceptible to winter-slowed conditions.
  • Because it’s super cold, keep an emergency kit in the car (blanket, extra gloves, phone charger) in case of delays.

✅ The Memaw Method Checklist

Parks Highway @ Little Coal Creek MP 163.2/Alaska 511
  • Leave a little earlier than usual so you’re not rushed.
  • Use low beams if the morning fog sets in; reduce speed accordingly.
  • Keep a safe following distance as icy patches can (and do) catch drivers unaware.
  • Monitor traffic/road-condition updates (via Alaska 511 or local DOT pages) before and during your trip.
  • Give snowplows plenty of room. DOT&PF trucks are big, slow, and spreading snow or abrasives. Don’t tailgate or try to pass them.
