Memaw’s Holiday Commute: Sunday, December 28, 2025

By Gina Hill | Alaska Headline Living | December 2025

Good morning, sugar. Memaw’s going to be plain with you today. Sunday is the worst wind day of the weekend. The National Weather Service says strong northeast winds are peaking, and with loose snow on the ground, blowing snow and sudden visibility drops are very likely. Roads can look fine one minute and turn tricky the next, especially across open stretches and valleys. Today is about patience, planning, and knowing when to ease up.

🚗 Parks Highway

Parks Hwy & Church St/S Mack Dr | Alaska 511
Time of DayTemperatureDriving Tips
Morning-5 to 5°FCold start with lingering snow on the roadway. Watch for drifting snow in open areas. Winds already noticeable in spots, especially northbound stretches.
Afternoon0 to 10°FStrong winds continue. Blowing snow can reduce visibility fast, even where roads look clear. Keep both hands on the wheel and slow down for gusts.
Evening-10 to 0°FWinds stay brisk and temperatures drop again. Re-freezing likely with fresh drifts forming. Give yourself extra stopping distance.

Memaw says: Sunday driving takes patience. If it feels squirrelly, ease up and let the wind have its tantrum.

🚗 Glenn Highway

Glenn Highway @ S Curves MP 10 | Alaska 511
Time of DayTemperatureDriving Tips
Morning0 to 8°FSnow-packed and icy in places. Winds already pushing snow back onto the road, especially through the Lower Matanuska Valley.
Afternoon5 to 15°FPeak wind concerns today. Gusts may shove vehicles and create sudden whiteout conditions. High-profile vehicles should use extra caution.
Evening-5 to 5°FWinds remain strong into the night. Roads may drift repeatedly even after plowing. Slow down and stay alert.

Memaw says: This is not the day to rush. White knuckles mean slow it down or wait it out.

🚗 Seward Highway

Seward Highway @ Huffman Road MP 120 | Alaska 511
Time of DayTemperatureDriving Tips
Morning10 to 18°FVariable conditions with snow and slick pavement. Watch shaded curves and bridge decks early.
Afternoon15 to 22°FWinds increase near Turnagain Arm. Blowing snow possible with sudden visibility drops. Expect changing road conditions mile to mile.
Evening5 to 12°FTemperatures fall and slick spots return quickly. Reduced visibility possible near mountain passes.

Memaw says: Pretty views do not mean easy driving. Keep your eyes up and your speed sensible.

🚗 Sterling Highway

Sterling Highway & Birch St/Park | Alaska 511
Time of DayTemperatureDriving Tips
Morning12 to 22°FPacked snow and icy stretches likely. Take curves slow and expect wildlife near dawn and dusk.
Afternoon18 to 28°FSlight warming but slush and refreeze possible. Watch for drifting snow in open areas.
Evening8 to 15°FColder air settles back in. Bridges and low spots may glaze over quickly after sunset.

Memaw says: Sunday night driving calls for calm nerves and steady hands. The road will still be there tomorrow.

👵 Memaw’s Last Word: If there’s a day to slow down, this is it. Strong winds, drifting snow, and bitter cold don’t mix well with rushing or distractions. Secure anything loose, keep both hands on the wheel, and don’t be shy about postponing a trip if conditions feel wrong. This wind will calm down soon enough. Your job today is to get home safe, not fast. 💨
