Memaw’s Arctic Roll Commute: The Black Ice Glass Slipper Edition 👡

By Gina Hill | Alaska Headline Living | March 2026

☕️ Good morning, sugar. If you stepped outside before sunrise today, you already felt it. This isn’t just chilly. This is fairy-tale cold.

At 4:13 a.m. Wasilla was sitting at -4°F, and the thermometer is expected to dip even lower to around -9°F by 9 a.m.before slowly climbing to a high of about 9°F by late afternoon. That’s the kind of cold that freezes your nose hairs before you reach the mailbox and turns every shiny patch of pavement into a glass slipper waiting for the wrong step.

Black ice forms fast. Blink and the road’s wearing a glass slipper.

And when temperatures dive below zero like this, your vehicle feels it too. Engines, batteries, and tire pressure all get grumpy. Even Cinderella would let the car warm up first.

Now. Before you roll out, let the pumpkin sit for a minute while the mice (batteries, engine, and tires) get warmed up, and remember that shiny pavement is usually ice looking for a partner to dance with. 💃

Let’s see what tales the highways are spinning today. 💅

🚙 Parks Highway

Parks Hwy & Big Lake Rd | Alaska 511 | Final laps around the ice. ⛸️❄️ The rink at the Big Lake Lions Recreation Center is winding down its winter season, with Sunday, March 15 marking the final day of ice. Skaters still have a few chances to glide before the melt, with public sessions Thursday and Friday from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., and a final Sunday skate from 5 to 8 p.m. After that, the arena trades blades for spring action as it prepares to host wrestling tournaments, expos, and other community events.

Memaw’s Parting Words

Listen, darling. This is real Alaska cold. Black ice waltzes under every wheel and even engines need a magic spell to start.

When it’s below zero in the morning and barely climbing into single digits by afternoon, everything gets brittle. Batteries. Door handles. Tempers in the Starbucks drive-through. Even your coffee might need a little warming charm.

So take it easy today. Let the mice (batteries, engine, and tires) get cozy. Give yourself extra minutes. And if your nose hairs freeze when you step outside, congratulations. That’s just Alaska reminding you who’s running the castle.

Bundle up and drive safe from dawn to night. 💅

Memaw’s road rule for Alaska drivers: Drive alive from dawn to night. ❄️🚗 A little rhythm for the road and a reminder that safe travels never go out of style.
