MAT-SU, AK – As Mat-Su residents continue clearing damage from this week’s powerful windstorm, the Matanuska-Susitna Borough announced a temporary waiver of construction and demolition (C&D) disposal fees for residential customers. The waiver allows homeowners to drop off non-hazardous debris — including lumber, concrete, furniture, and other storm-damaged materials — at no cost.

The fee waiver begins Thursday, December 11, 2025, and continues through close of business Sunday, December 21, 2025. The program is limited to residential customers; commercial accounts are not eligible.

Brush and woody debris, such as downed trees and limbs, will continue to be accepted year-round at no charge at Central Landfill and at the Big Lake, Willow, and Talkeetna transfer sites.

Red Cross Shelter Shuts Down After Serving Dozens

The American Red Cross of Alaska has now closed the emergency shelter at the Menard Sports Complex. During its activation, the shelter averaged 17 overnight guests, provided power and a warm space for more than 50 people, and served over 200 meals and snacks.

For anyone still needing support related to the storm, the Red Cross is directing residents to call 1-800-RED-CROSS.

NOAA: Winds Expected to Pick Back Up

Even as cleanup continues, the National Weather Service — a division of NOAA — reports that another round of strong winds is forecast to return to the Matanuska Valley.

According to NWS, northeast winds are expected to increase again, with sustained winds around 30 to 40 mph and gusts potentially reaching 60 to 75 mph, depending on location and channeling effects in the Valley.

Forecasters note that loose debris from the recent storm should be secured promptly, especially with cleanup materials now piling up at homes and properties.

Moving Forward

Between the borough’s disposal fee waiver, the Red Cross relief work, and the ongoing federal forecasts guiding preparedness, the Mat-Su community is steadily transitioning from response to recovery — even as residents brace for another burst of winter wind.
