❄️ Winter Weather: Slick Roads Ahead in Southcentral

A National Weather Service Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Anchorage, the Lower Matanuska Valley, and Susitna Valley through Monday morning. Residents should expect a wintry mix of snow, freezing rain, and rain. Forecasts call for up to 3 inches of snow and a light glaze of ice, creating dangerous travel conditions, especially on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid unnecessary travel.

🏛️ State Moves: APFC Board Appointment

Ralph Samuels has been appointed to the Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation (APFC) Board of Trustees. Samuels’ early career included hands-on work for a small Alaskan airline before moving into public service, a lesser-known start to a long leadership journey. His experience in both the private sector and the legislature is expected to be an asset in managing Alaska’s sovereign wealth fund.

🏛️ State Moves: Senate Confirmations

On Saturday, the Alaska Senate formally confirmed George Rauscher and Cathy Tilton to fill two Senate vacancies. The seats opened when Senators Mike Shower (R‑Wasilla) and Shelley Hughes (R‑Palmer) stepped down to run for higher office. Governor Mike Dunleavy praised Rauscher and Tilton as “qualified” and “committed to public service.”
Rauscher served in the Alaska House of Representatives beginning in 2017 and has been active on issues such as energy and resources, including advocating for the creation of an Alaska Department of Agriculture by executive order. Tilton has been in the Alaska Legislature since 2015, first elected to the House in 2014. She served as Speaker of the Alaska House from 2023 to 2025 and previously as Minority Leader. Her district is in the Mat‑Su Borough (Wasilla area), ensuring continued representation for the region.
With their move to the Senate, Rauscher’s and Tilton’s seats in the House are now vacant, and under state law the governor has 30 days to nominate successors. Their arrival reshuffles representation for the Mat‑Su region and may alter caucus alignment and internal Senate power dynamics in the upcoming session.
