For many Alaskans, cats are family. When financial stress makes it harder to keep food in the bowl, Alaska Cat Adoption Team (ACAT) steps in with compassion and practical help.

ACAT is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has been serving cats and their owners since its founding in 2010. The organization’s mission centers on rescue, education, outreach, and coordination with other rescue groups across Alaska. Its work includes finding loving homes for cats, promoting spay and neuter practices, and educating the public about responsible pet care. ACAT operates as a no-kill organization, meaning cats in its care stay with the group until they are placed in homes or, occasionally, transferred to another rescue capable of finding them homes. Cats are euthanized only for clear medical reasons with a veterinarian’s guidance. (alaskacatadoptionteam.org)

Helping People Feed Their Cats

One of ACAT’s community-focused programs is a feline food pantry, designed to assist families and individuals who may be struggling to afford cat food. This food pantry is stocked through donations from local partners like Pet Smart and Pet Zoo, private contributions, and ACAT’s own funds. Anyone needing help feeding their cats, or who knows someone in need, is encouraged to reach out to ACAT to learn more and access support.

How to Access Support or Give Back

People seeking assistance with cat food can call or text 907-982-2228 to connect with ACAT. Those who wish to donate to help feed cats can contribute in several ways:

  • Online donations via ACAT’s secure website: https://www.alaskacatadoptionteam.org/donate
  • Monetary donations by check or in person at ACAT events or facilities
  • Cat food and supply donations from individuals or local businesses

Donations help ACAT keep its feline food pantry stocked and support the rescue and care of cats throughout Alaska.

In addition to food assistance, ACAT promotes responsible pet ownership through education about spay and neuter practices, helping reduce the number of unwanted pets in the community. Kittens adopted before the recommended age for spay or neuter require a modest deposit to help cover the procedure, while older cats are altered prior to adoption. ACAT also works with owners of mother cats to ensure they are spayed, often arranging and paying for the procedure when needed.

ACAT offers multiple ways for the community to get involved, including donating supplies, volunteering, joining adoption efforts, or contributing through community giving programs. Anyone interested in helping can learn more and get involved here: Alaska Cat Adoption Team

Every donation, volunteer hour, and act of support helps make a meaningful difference in the lives of cats and the people who care for them.
