Bardot first rose to global prominence in the 1950s and 60s, with her breakout role in And God Created Woman (1956) cementing her status as a defining face of post-war French cinema. The film caused controversy in the United States: a 1958 Ennis Daily News clipping reported that the Dallas Motion Picture Board of Review requested the film not be shown at the Esquire Theatre, citing its content, though screenings were allowed under controlled attendance. Bardot’s performance redefined cinematic portrayals of femininity and sensuality, captivating audiences worldwide.

After retiring from acting at 39, Bardot focused on animal welfare, founding the Fondation Brigitte Bardot in 1986. The organization grew into a major force in animal protection, rescuing thousands of creatures and influencing policy in France and beyond.

Macron Pays Tribute

French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute early Sunday in a post on X, calling Bardot a defining figure of French and global culture:

“Her films, her voice, her dazzling glory, her initials, her sorrows, her generous passion for animals, her face that became Marianne, Brigitte Bardot embodied a life of freedom. French existence, universal brilliance. She touched us. We mourn a legend of the century.” (X post)

Bardot’s legacy remains multifaceted. Celebrated for her cultural impact and animal activism, she was also a controversial figure due to outspoken political views in later years. Social media reflected this complexity, with commenters both honoring her contributions to film and critiquing her political statements.

Bardot’s life was one of dramatic reinvention. From the beaches of Saint-Tropez to international film sets and later to the frontlines of animal rescue, she lived boldly and unapologetically. Her foundation vows to continue her work, carrying forward the causes she championed with fierce dedication. She will be remembered as both a cinematic icon and a passionate advocate for the voiceless.
