Firefighters are investigating a mobile home trailer fire that erupted early this morning in Anchorage, forcing residents to make desperate escapes as smoke filled the home. The Anchorage Fire Department (AFD) shared details of the incident on social media, underscoring the dangers of winter fires and the importance of functioning smoke alarms.
According to AFD, occupants awoke to a cloud of toxic smoke with no prior warning from smoke detectors. One resident escaped through the front door before flames blocked the exit, while a second had to break through a kitchen window to avoid the fire. By the time firefighters arrived, flames were shooting from the front of the home, and bystanders reported a possible third person still inside.
Fire crews conducted a search of the smoke-filled trailer and located the unconscious occupant. Using a window midway along the length of the trailer, firefighters maneuvered the victim to safety, where emergency medical personnel transported all three residents to area hospitals for treatment.

“Every second counts in a fire,” AFD emphasizes. “Smoke alarms save lives. Make sure yours are working and have a clear escape plan this winter.”
Winter months increase fire risks in Alaska due to heating devices, space heaters, and indoor cooking, making regular safety checks and escape planning essential. Fire officials advise residents to:
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors monthly.
- Keep exits and pathways clear of snow, ice, and clutter.
- Avoid overloading electrical circuits with space heaters or holiday lights.
- Plan multiple escape routes for every room in the home.
AFD praised bystanders who alerted crews quickly, noting that timely intervention was critical in saving lives.
