Aidan Cole will Represent Alaska at the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

The annual Alaska State Spelling Bee at the Wendy Williamson Auditorium in Anchorage, showcased talented young spellers from across the state. Students in grades four through eight competed in multiple rounds, showcasing focus, skill, and a love of words.
After a tense final round, Aidan Cole, an eighth grader from Kenai Middle School, secured first place by correctly spelling “Thrasonical”, an adjective meaning boastful or given to bragging. In other words, anyone acting thrasonical might announce, “I just conquered the toughest word in Alaska, and yes, my big brain deserves a standing ovation.” 🧠
Runner-up honors went to Maria Jose Hernandez, also in eighth grade, representing Homer Middle School. Both students were praised for their composure and skill throughout the competition.
The excitement was shared on social media by Peak 2 Peak Alaska, a community events promoter and sponsor of the spelling bee, which highlighted the achievements of the two finalists. “What an incredible day at the Alaska State Spelling Bee! We are so proud to celebrate two amazing 8th graders who gave it their all,” the company wrote on Instagram.
As the state champion, Cole will receive a $2,000 scholarship deposited into an Alaska 529 college savings account and will represent Alaska at the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
The competition was promoted and supported by Peak 2 Peak Alaska, Anchorage Daily News, and other community partners, emphasizing the importance of academic excellence and statewide participation.
For families, friends, and community members, the day was a celebration of dedication, hard work, and the thrill of friendly competition, including Madison Thompson, a 5th grader representing Airport Heights Elementary School, who impressed everyone with her effort and commitment.
